That’s exactly right. We can admire all these old heroes mainly because the media wasn’t what it is and also not everybody had a camcorder in their pocket. Myths and legends thrive on lack of detail and specificity.

Saban? Bryant? Stallings? Certainly not.
Go down the list--Perkins, Curry, DuBose, Franchione, Shula....Price had his hookers but never saw the field, and even if he had, I couldn't imagine him behaving that way.
