Birmingham's CFB obsession

The ratings for the Ole Miss-Alabama game Saturday were somewhat lackluster. Apparently not that many people, relatively speaking, want to sit around and watch a team run up the score on another.... but don't tell that to people in the state of Alabama:
This is a MONSTER number for any one market for just about any event... especially for just a random regular season game.
To put this in perspective, when the Chiefs were playing in the Super Bowl, the Kansas City market had a 55.7 rating... Birmingham's rating for just a typical Alabama game on CBS is not all that far off from a Super Bowl rating for a participant team. I mean that's pretty unreal.
Of every TV in the Birmingham area on Saturday afternoon, 44% of those were turned on to the Bama game, and of the ones that were turned on, 65% were watching it.
That's insane!

Mississippi-Alabama was the top college football game of the weekend, averaging a 2.7 rating and 4.79 million viewers on the SEC on CBS — the network’s most-watched game in week five of the season since 2015. The Tide’s easy win actually declined 3% in ratings, but increased 1% in viewership, compared to last year (Texas A&M-Alabama: 2.75, 4.76M). Versus the same matchup in 2019, ratings and viewership jumped 21% and 34% respectively from a 2.2 and 3.59 million.
Notably, the game averaged a 43.5 rating and whopping 65 share in Birmingham (Ala.).

Do you know if these ratings account for streaming tv packages, such as YouTube tv and sling?

Well…yeah. Birmingham is the largest collection of Bama fans.

What were the popcorn sales in the Birmingham market?

Too bad Birmingham is a small, low-value market.

Just for the record, the National Title Game involving either Alabama or Auburn usually scores a 67 rating in Birmingham.... which again is complete insanity.
I've never seen any other market score that high for any other program, even the Super Bowl for when the home team is participating.

I mean its obviously not a large market, but its certainly not tiny either. Birmingham is the country's 45th largest television market, ahead of four markets with major professional sports teams (#50 New Orleans, #51 Memphis, #53 Buffalo, #69 Green Bay).

And the entire market will tune in this Saturday night to watch Alabama smash A&M.

Little old but
Monday’s Auburn/Oregon BCS National Championship Game earned a staggering 67.0 rating in the Birmingham market, virtually even with last year’s Alabama/Texas title game on ABC (67.4).

Lots of money is wagered in the Bham area on football games and according to the FBI its one of the highest in the nation per capita during football season. I had a former FBI agent as a neighbor years ago and knew about the gambling in the Bham area and just how big it is.

It was the most-watched CFB game last week. So relatively speaking it was a big number.
Alabama is one of only 4 schools to have multiple games hit at least 5 million viewers.
Bama, OSU, Penn St. and ND are the only schools.

Kind of curious if the LSU/Auburn game had highest rating for the 9pm game has been so far this season.
I only made it through each team's first possession before I cut it off. Several other friends I was texting with didn't make it beyond half time.
9pm Eastern shouldn't have SEC kick offs. That's PAC12 and Mtn West time.
