Auburn is disqualified from historic anything in basketball, but Auburn-Ark might be the edgiest of late.

Arkansas is our historical better, obviously, but I think the bleedover of Arkansas being perpetually melty about Auburn football and probably a little annoyed at us being competitive in basketball has ramped it up. And then they got to take us out on a big stage last season (not embarrassing but rustle-inducing anyway). Both with very polarizing coaches too.

It's funny that the 4 most polarizing coaches (previous to 2022) were I think pretty clearly Oats, Muss, Wade and Pearl.

Muss and Wade clearly liked eachother and hated Oats and Pearl, and Oats and Pearl clearly liked/respect eachother and hate Muss and Wade.

UK vs UT jumps out.

Kentucky has played UT more than any other opponent in basketball (152 times), only slightly more than they've played Vandy. Here is how UK's program record is against SEC competition.

(Team/Games/Winning %)

1. Tennessee - 152 - .671
2. Vanderbilt - 151 - .755
3. Florida - 139 - .712
4. Georgia - 135 - .837
5. Alabama - 121 - .727
6. LSU - 114 - .754
7. Auburn - 113 - .796
8. Ole Miss - 111 - .892
9. Miss St. - 107 - .822
10. South Carolina - 64 - .797
14. Arkansas - 44 - .667
20. Missouri - 17 - .824
27. aTm - 14 - .714

So, they've played Tennessee more than any other program in the country, and (for teams they've played more than 10 times), UT has the 10th highest winning %.

The programs ahead of UT are (listed by Opponent - number of games played - UK winning %):

1. Marquette - 11 - .364
2. Michigan State - 14 - .429
3. UNC - 39 - .436
4. UCLA - 16 - .500
5. St. Louis - 16 - .500
6. Duke - 20 - .500
7. Ohio St. - 14 - .571
8. Indiana - 49 - .612
9. Louisville - 45 - .667
10. Tennessee - 152 - .667

ETA...numbers subject to change after tomorrow.

LSU/Alabama was on a path to being really good until Wade got canned.

I think Nate still hates LSU, so hopefully this one gets spicy again.

I dunno, I think Wade and maybe even more so Bill Armstrong made that spice.

Hodg and Pett vs Bill Armstrong might have been more hate filled than Wade and Oats.

This site skews everything for me, I can't ever gauge rivalries with LSU because when you spend time here you view everyone's matchup with LSU as pretty hostile

Absent this place I'd never have any contact with LSU people

Tennessee/Vandy and Tennessee/Memphis during the Pearl era was always really good - especially when Tennessee went to Memorial.

Tennessee/Vandy was can't miss viewing at the peak of the Pearl/Stallings days. Hasn't been a great rivalry at all really since Pearl left UT. Just need Vandy to build a decent basketball program again so the intensity will return to the series.

Tennessee/Memphis isn't SEC obviously, but that is a game that should be played every year. Arguably the best and most bitter rivalry in college basketball that is not played on an annual basis. UT basketball fans and Memphis basketball fans truly detest each other.

Exactly the same - sometimes I'll flip around and see LSU playing ETSU or someone in basketball and catch myself being like "hell yea" about LSU doing something bad and then immediately be like "Wait, what, I don't care about this"

Yes it should - it's an awesome game and an awesome environment in either building.

I think that's true for Tennessee vs Vandy & Tennessee vs Florida.

Both series have been surprisingly a lot more one sided in favor of UT since Barnes took over.

Really we've had Florida's number in basketball consistently since Pearl arrived. Even those back-to-back natty winning Donovan teams only beat us once combined. Our overall success vs UF basketball the past 15 years or 20 years has served as a minor lil consolation prize for all those football defeats we have suffered from them during that time span.

Kentucky coming to town was an entirely different vibe than anybody else.

Although UGA is rarely competitive against Kentucky, when Kentucky came to Athens when I was a student 5-10 years ago the energy in Stegeman was different. UGA is hardly known for having a great college basketball environment, but the Kentucky game was electric for as long as UGA stayed in the game. There was always the talk of “if we can pull this off, then we are storming the court.”

Yep - and part of that was that you knew 20-25% of the arena would be in blue.

The most shocking thing about the Alabama/Kentucky game last week was that there were almost no Kentucky fans in the arena. I can't remember the last time that happened, even in years when Kentucky was pretty meh.

Oh, for sure. BBN always has good numbers in Athens. I guess you can chalk that up to there probably being a decent amount of UK grads in Atlanta.

Same goes for Auburn and Alabama, at least my junior and senior years when those two programs were ascendant. There was one game my junior year, which is think was the year that Auburn burst onto the scene and won the SEC before petering out in the NCAAT against Clemson, where they kicked our arse, and my buddy got pissed because they took over the coliseum and began to sing their version of “Glory” when our band played it.

Another time, when Colin Sexton played for Alabama, that same buddy was heckling Sexton before the game, got him riled up, and he tried a big dunk right in front of us at the end of warm ups and missed, and then started to yell at the aforementioned friend. Sexton I think went on to score 30.

Maybe. I just got the impression from his media comments today that he was trying to take a few shots and kick em while they're down. But then again that could just be Nate being Nate. It's tough to discern between brutal, unfiltered honesty and trash talk with him sometimes.

Ah yes, the Kentucky and the 13 Dwarves era of SEC basketball. Hopefully gone and never to be seen again.

1000% agreed.

The problem is we demand a series that exclusively rotates home-and-home each year. Memphis doesn't want us playing in Memphis ever because they think that somehow gives us a recruiting edge in that city. They desire the game be played annually at a neutral site in Nashville. We respond by saying "thanks but no thanks". They then counter and claim they are willing to accept the home-home terms, but only on the condition we simultaneously lock in a home-home annual series with Memphis in football which is nothing that interests us at all. Thus, here we are: Memphis-Tennessee typically never playing in basketball despite the series having the potential as being considered one of the fiercest rivalries in all of college basketball.
