I'll be honest and have no clue what the TV contracts are and how CBS gets to pick Big 10 games.
And by meat of conference schedule, was just saying the top Big 10 teams haven't really played each other yet.
2023 - SEC on CBS
Weeks 3 to 7 - 28.04 mil total viewers (5.61 mil avg)
2024 - Big 10 on CBS
Weeks 3 to 7 - 20.23 mill total viewers (4.05 mil avg)
Those numbers may get closer as the season goes on, but if CBS doesn't have first pick of games like another poster mentioned, then maybe not.

Someone is posting misleading numbers then.
Earlier in the week, I read the Ohio St/Oregon game drew 13M viewers and stablized (meaning continuous watching) at 11M.
You'd think in this day and age of digital TV, it would be simple to figure out how many eyeballs are on a specific game.....and for how long.

Was there another p4 v g5 game that did better in that time slot?

Always an intriguing matchup but now that both teams are in the
SEC it just means more .
SEC it just means more .

The B1G has contracts with CBS, NBC and FOX. I don't know the specifics, but that is one big reason they are making more money than us this year.
I might have even suggested having a GOTW seperate from that so there would always be the CBS afternoon game.

Penn State @ USCw (4.3 million) had more viewers than Ole Miss @ LSU (4.2 million)
so basically 2 of the biggest programs in CFB who are in opposite sections of the country and in 2 of the most populated states beat out a regional game involving 2 of the smallest markets by 100k

Do they have conference total viewership numbers for last week anywhere?
I'd almost be willing to bet that the SEC viewership outnumbered the B1G and ACC combined.

CBS is paying 1/6th of what they would have had to pay for SEC rights, and they're only getting the 3rd choice of B1G games each weekend. THey are beyond happy with their choice.

The SEC package is stronger.
21.1M across 5 games Vs 18.8M for B1G in week 7.
13.5M across 3 games vs 12.3M for B1G in week 6.
22.8 across 4 games vs 10M for B1G in week 5.

Penn St—USC was also opposite a blowout in the Texas—OU game.
Ole Miss—LSU was opposite the marque game of the week, OSU—Oregon.
Plus, Tenn—UF drew another 3.25 on ESPN.
So, CBS had competition from one blowout game.
The ABC game had competition from another SEC game, and biggest game of the week.

I watched some highlights of the Penn State/USC game and the CBS broadcast lacked energy...Brad Nessler and Gary were boring sounding...

If CBS can't pull in mega ratings on a close USC / Penn St game with both ranked, they have a problem, as does the Big Ten in the next negotiation round. Huge market games like that (LA, Philly, Pittsburgh) between bluebloods are why the B10 expanded and why they got such a huge deal. At some point the SEC has to win a tv negotiation round when a struggling Alabama vs unranked South Carolina at 11 AM is beating USC Penn St.
Unless advertisers are willing to pay networks more per viewer in B10 markets than in the South, which could be true but seems doubtful long term with current economic trends.

LA and the northeast outside of Penn State just aren't fond of college football and that will eventually bite the asses of the networks.

Bump. Just did a rough count and it appears CBS is averaging 4.2M viewers per game while ABC (SEC gotw) is averaging 8M
