Big dogs of the SEC
LSU can be in the discussion, but they are not as important as Tennessee or Georgia. Feelings hurt or not...
Bama
Florida
Tennessee/Georgia

Has Tennessee, Georgia, or - for that matter - Bama had:
-An Elite 8 team, and a Final 4 team in men's basketball this decade?
-5 straight women's basketball final fours?
-Numerous men's and women's track national championships in the last quarter century?
-6 CWS national championships and 14 CWS appearances in last 20 years?
-10 staright football bowll games since 2000
with 7-3 record?
-2 BCS National championships in last 7 years?

I didn't think so. Feelings are great.

As we saw with Kansas in the Big 12, all other sports take a back seat to football. Football is what determines conference power in the BCS conferences.

Exactly, which is why LSU, UF, and Bama would be the "spokesperson" for Slive if any of the other schools wanted to leave.

The thing is there aren't just 3 powerful schools in the SEC. There are several

UF
Bama
UT
UGA
LSU
AUB
UK

the ones that don't have as much power are newer to the conference, in MS, or are Vandy.

That's why the SEC is the best league in the country.

The beauty of the SEC is that each school wields equal power. While Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee maybe the traditional powers of the conference, schools like Auburn and Ole Miss are just as important.

since it is athletics Bama and TN football success may be outweighed by Fla and LSU success in other programs as well. If Tx was just good at football I dont think they would be this influential in the big 12. LSU was solid but not a great program pror to the last decade but what does help their sec prowess is the fact that they are a great baseball program and the same goes for Fla. If you are just considering fb then Bama, TN GA and FLa would be the top dogs but when considering the strength you hold in the conference you have to consider the big 2. Lest face it outside of Fla for a couple of yrs the SEC does not have a premiere program like Tx that challenges in all 3 sports.

LSU made it to the men's and women's final fours, the college world series, and won the national title in football all within 2 years of each other this decade. But our basketball program hasn't been consistent. Hopefully, that will get stablized under Johnson.

I replaced LSU with TN because TN has been historically better than LSU. LSU is better now, but it hasn't been that way for long.
sshhh.

LSU brings in the dough. I assume we are using football as the marker as it is the cash cow for most schools in the SEC.

The big dogs nationally (and the great thing about the SEC is that they are numerous and the 2nd tier is as good as some conferences' big dogs) are LSU, Bama, Florida, and to a steadily declining degree Tennessee.

2nd tier -- Georgia, Auburn, and I could include the Arkansas and South Carolina (not based on wins, but by fan loyalty through sales of tickets and merchandise)

And The Rest are here on Gilligan's Isle.

And don't forget the power Vandy wields as our Academic mule and Kentucky with it's Basketball Jones.

What do Ole Miss and Ms State do? teat suckers I kid I kid...You wield power as our racist and cowbell powers

Thank you. LSU comes in 4th or 5th. Sorry Boudreaux's.

LSU has more national championships than any other team in the country outside of California.

Sorry, pigs.

yea thats what I am saying. LSu is consistant in baseball, KY basketball, Bama has been over it lifetime a great fb tradition, but for crying out loud their baseball team makes it to the SR and they dont seem to care for the most part. I think the fans here do on this site but I think that has to do with the fact that this is an LSU site and it is important to LSU fans. Not to be a hypocrite I like college baseball but cant stand basketball; however, I do now recognize the need to be good in all 3. Our conference lacks consistancy.

Titles mean nothing in other sports (as we saw with Kansas- they were ready to relegate Kansas to the MWC) football drives the conferences. Other sports weren't even a blip on the radar in this last debacle.

yeah youre probably right LSU comes in 4th or 5th IN THE NCAA!

I don't think your list counts football or LSU's 1936 basketball title.

I think it's up to 46.

its not about Championships or tradition...its about $$$$..

its nice that teams win but when bringing in eyeballs to TV sets the $$$ matter

Florida - State of FL
Georgia -ATL market
Tennessee - all of TN
LSU - All of LA and East TX

Unlike UTexas..we don't have one big dog who can call the shots...

I can't see TN, UF, Bama, LSU or UGA saying...I am doing this and you guys have to listen to me...

After the thunderous laughter, the rest of the SEC would say..."Okay, frick you"

State isn't Ole Miss' bitch..

No way Aubie would blindly follow Bama...

The SEC has more than 3 big dogs, imo.

In no particular order except 1:

Bama
Florida
Tennessee
Georgia
Lsu

I think another thing that adds to any power LSU wields is that they are the only SEC school in Louisiana. That's not a whole lot of TV, but it is some, but it is also VERY fertile recruiting ground.

Without LSU, the SEC loses Louisiana altogether.
