I would say we were there at rhe same time, OMalleys had deteriorated in to a towney bar but was close and they did the nickle night thing, which usually turned out bad for us.

I had several friends that worked at Uptown which was our go to bar downtown. Walked in on a Friday at 5pm for happy hour and it was as if it was 2 am, they made margaritas in Igloo Water coolers and everyone was 2 am hammered at 5pm.

Saved the Gymnastic team a embarrassing outing at Washington Street when the cops showed up to check ids, got them out the back door just in time.

There’s 2 categories imo:
Shitty fun bars for under 21 especially guys - places like Cluck U in Gainesville that had quarter pitcher nights

Upperclassmen bars/ clubs

Bartended a few years at Lowery’s in Athens (before I turned 21 oddly)..wasn’t the best bar but nickel night certainly left it’s mark on some folks.

+1 AU Supper Club

Remember some over the top bar from a trip to Gainesville but honestly can’t remember much about it.

Back in the 1990s....

JR's Lightbulb Club on Block Ave. Legendary two-level (basement and street) bar and music venue. So many good alternative bands made it through there on their way to stardom.

Maxine's Tap room (still there, but its gone upscale). IT's been there since 1950. Feels like a place you'd find in NYC.

George's Majestic, since 1929. Old arse bar two blocks off campus. It has been an old hippie and Boomer haven for a decade, though. Still has some good live shows out in the beer garden.

There was a video of Jeremy Hill cheap shotting a drunk kid like 1/2

Also made a video of him with a 14 year old child when he was 18.

LSU didn’t care and signed him to a scholarship and team voted him on the team after he violated his criminal probation for the sucker punch assault.

All typical LSU behavior.

Still can’t believe O’Malleys closed. Great setting and place to celebrate after a W. Lots of memories.

Two Keys and Lynaugh's are the two that stood the test of time at UK. Covid forced Two Keys to shut down. Honestly couldnt tell you what the good ones are on campus now, I really don't venture down there these days.

I don't know about any Athens bars through the decades that would necessarily be on the Mt Rushmore of college bars, but what is special is the shear number of them, and they were all totally different vibes.

You can walk into one bar and it's all pool tables and rednecks, if that's not your scene, walk 40 ft down the sidewalk to a beat-nik bar with art and shite all over the walls and fruity drinks, if that's not your scene walk another 40 ft to a bar with a dance floor and dj, if that's not your scene then walk another 40 ft and there's a townie bar with live local original music, if that's not your scene walk another 40 ft to a bar with 25 TV's with sports 24/7, if that's not your scene, walk another 40 ft to a bar with blue hairs and punk rockers covered in grafitti and loud punk music, and so forth. There's a bar for everyone, and I mean everyone, in Athens. The scene itself is like a Mt Rushmore of itself.
