Obviously, it's too soon, but Hot Rod will have this one in the bag, when it's all said and done.

How long have you been sleeping this time, Rip?

For the first time in 39 years, placekickers are no longer allowed to use a tee on field goals and extra points in collegiate games, but must kick off the ground as NFL kickers currently do.

And Butler is currently the only kicker in the college football HOF.

While Vaughn will arguably be remembered for his failed attempts against LSU in 2005 which cost Auburn the game, Vaughn rebounded and only missed 5 kicks the rest of his college career. ESPN College Gameday did special segment on Vaughn to share his story. He is also remembered for a game-winning field goal in 2005 that beat Georgia 31-30 with 0:06 remaining in the game.

Luckily Vaughn rebounded nicely from that game and was the SEC special teams player of the year in 2006.

Is Hot Rod a 6th or 7th year senior? Seems like he has been at UGA forever.

I would have said Butler until Carlson arrived but I think people look back and think he was better than he really was. They also blend in his pro career were he got better. In 2015 and 2016 Carlson was dead on the best and was routinely hitting 50 plus yard field goals with no tee. This hurt Carlson in 2017 because Gus would attempt almost anything over 50 and Carlson missed a few thus hurting his percentage. That’s why his FGP is 23 of 31. Also Butler kicked off a tee as all from that era did so I would have to give it to Carlson.

Weren't in SEC yet, but Jeff Wolfert for Mizzou was automatic on XP's. Never missed one in college career. 82% FG's too. Not to mention being a walk-on AFTER being an All-Conference Diver as a freshman.

Everyone needs to know about the best kicker never to make it to the SEC. His name was Willie Q. Richardson.

I believe you're right. One hit one upright, then he over-corrected and hit the other in OT.

The year before, this happened...
quote:

2004 season

Alex Serna leads what has been described as a storybook college career, one that did not start out on the best foot. His first game as the starting kicker for Oregon State was a trial by fire. The Beavers opened the 2004 season visiting the reigning 2003 BCS national champions LSU Tigers in their famously raucous Tiger Stadium. The Beavers gave the highly favored Tigers a very close game, however Serna, then a walk-on redshirt freshman, became the focal point when he missed three extra point (PAT) attempts in a game the Beavers lost by one point, 22-21. Complicating matters for Serna, the game ended in an exciting overtime period that hinged on him kicking a PAT to keep the Beavers in the game. When he missed, he immediately pulled off his own helmet and yelled in frustration. An Associated Press photographer caught the moment, and the resulting photo became well publicized by the sports media as a poignant symbol of the trials of kickers in a week where a number of other kickers also missed key kicks.

(Serna would go on to win the 2005 Groza Award.)

Tiger Stadium, where kickers' dreams go to die.

So let me see if I see what you're saying here...
- Carlson attempted more FGs than Butler
- Carlson made more FGs than Butler
- Carlson made a higher percentage of FGs attempted than Butler and accomplished that without using a FG tee (like Butler)
- Carlson attempted more XPs than Butler
- Carlson made more XPs than Butler
- Carlson made a higher percentage of XPs attempted than Butler and accomplished that without using a FG tee (like Butler)
- Carlson had more career points than Butler

So, putting on my 1980 UGA MNC mesh-thinking-cap and getting down on my hands and knees and barking for a bit, all that proves to me is this:

Butler >>>>> Carlson

Did I get the math right?
