That Alabama fans complain about the guy is ridiculous.

Not really.

Very few Alabama fans hold anything against the man personally. We're very appreciative of him stepping into what was an almost impossible situation. But that doesn't mean we aren't allowed to criticize his coaching, which was lacking to say the least.

The players were out of shape and lost a lot of games in the fourth quarter because the conditioning program at Alabama was lax under Shula. He treated the locker room like it was a professional team instead of a college one, and counted on the players to make the mature decision to do workouts on their own. Many didn't and it showed.

In tight games, he would often coach not to lose and go conservative. This cost us in several games throughout his career, the most famous example being 2006 Arkansas. We had that sucker won. Marching down the field, Arkansas powerless to stop us, and we decide to run Darby up the middle to bleed clock and try to ice the game with a long field goal with a true freshman at kicker. We lost in double OT.

His recruiting also was not that good, though a portion of that could be blamed on probation. However, he and his coaching staff were terrible at identifying particular needs as well as judging talent. They would heavily recruit and sign two-star athletes because they thought they were signing a hidden blue-chipper. In reality, many of those players were as advertised. The only one who seemingly wasn't was Javier Arenas and we recruited him to play RB.

Going from Brad Scott to Lou Holtz has to be up there.

At Missouri. Definitely Kim Anderson to Cuonzo Martin. Because Kim Anderson was just so terrible. Anyone who thought he would be good should have all basketball credibility stripped forever.

That's an upgrade like Dooley to Butch Jones was an upgrade.

At the time grabbing Lou Holtz out of retirement to replace Brad Scott's 1-11 team seemed incredible.

eta: It was still a big upgrade overall.

Curley Hallman to Gerry Dinardo. Dinardo won more games in his first two years at LSU than Hallman did in his entire four years. Dinardo won 27 games and 3 bowl games in his first 3 years, but stumbled his final two.

Not coaching but the biggest AD upgrade in the history of Western Civilization is Joe Alleva to Scott Woodward.

Will Wade is a huge upgrade over Johnny Jones in basketball also.

As a Tennessee fan, I'm pretty happy with upgrading from Donny (the Gravy Seal) Tyndall to Rick Barnes...but actually the upgrade from John Sines (0.366) to Ray Mears (0.713) was probably a better upgrade.

It worked.

Oates will be more of the same from Bama basketball. Yall just aren't that good, and that's proven by your history in the ncaa tourney. He won't do shite at bama, like the rest of them.
