The best BBQ I've ever tasted was a place in Jacksonville, AL called the Rocket. On Hwy 21 just south of town. Small place that seats about 25 people. Been there since like 1956. Dude has his original pit from that time and has fresh hickory wood brought in weekly. Best onion rings I've ever had as well. They use pancake batter as the base instead of cornmeal or flour.

Memphis has some good BBQ. There are several good places in SC - the home of the original BBQ in the Colonies. Texas has the best brisket probably .... quite a few places.

I actually have never had the BBQ there, but the onion rings are practically a religious experience. I mean the angels are singing.

I think Austin has surpassed Lockhart, but it is a really cool place to go and experience the cradle of Texas BBQ.

Your neighbors to the north seem to be awfully proud of their barbecue. They take the Eastern style/Lexington style debate pretty seriously. I’ve only ever had the Lexington style, pretty good but I don’t understand all of the fuss. Are you a fan of either?

What are some of the best places in Lockhart?
Kreuz Market
Black's Barbecue
Smitty's Market
Terry Black's
All within 1 mile of each other.
I've been to Kreuz a number of times, never disappointed.

I just looked at Kreuz on Yelp and had to hold back the drool. Smoked prime rib? I’m in LOL.

This is literally a myth.

KC BBQ is just pot roast with a sauce

I like everybody’s bbq….anytime, any place. Cheers!

Is the Terry Black’s in Austin head and shoulders better than the one in Dallas? Because while the one in Dallas is pretty good, it is nowhere near as good as they think it is.

Georgia puts that weird arse mustard sauce on their BBQ. No thanks.

It is all just a matter of opinion.

I wouldn't say that's "the best" in context of the traditional southern style, but credit where credit is due, that's maybe the most unique BBQ scene in the whole state of Texas, and everyone commenting here should stop by there and experience it if they get a chance.
A fishing trip to Port Aransas via Austin is never complete, or really started, until a stop in Lockhart at Kreuz or Black’s.

Lockhart, Tx

People who live nearby know which thing is done best by which place and will do multiple orders from all. (Like brisket from one, sausage from another, desserts and select sides from yet another and so on)

4) Nashville
No
Almost every BBQ place in Nashville is some sort of chain. The ones that aren’t are largely average at best

My pulled pork go to is Tops in Memphis. It's a deep cut, but that's where a lot of long time Memphians go for a pork sandwich.
Best brisket I ever had was John Mueller's trailer off South Congress in Austin many years ago. Maybe 2008. No one was better than John, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Dry ribs at the Rendezvous in downtown Memphis.
But the best BBQ I ever had was in in a little roadside shack in Fair Oaks, Arkansas in the 1970's. I was about 12, and my father and I had just left a freezing duck blind. We stopped on the way home and that sandwich was pure heaven. I can remember the smoked taste, the sauce and the Coke I washed it down with. The sandwich could have been average, but that whole experience, and my starvation, keeps it at #1.
