How is Malzahn's job security looking? Y'all have turned it around a little but also have a tough second half. What record would it take for him to get canned?

5-7... (Nice deflection)
ETA: Gus is 30-15, not great. He has won the SEC, has beaten Alabama.

Conference record is 16-12.

He took over a team that went 3-9 and 0-8. He hit a slump, but our slump is better than a good year at Arkie.

I hate that fat frick he can't get fired soon enough. Unfortunately Long loves him so he'll keep him around for a few more years saying he just needs more time to build the program the right way.

I think they split those four and finish 8-4. If he goes 0-4 somehow then things could get interesting. I don't see that happening though

Presumably they beat MSU and Mizzou to close out the year (but those are both away games, so not gimmies), but I wonder what it will take in that stretch for the Pigs to get a bit upset with him. We all know he's probably 100% safe even if he loses all 4 games. I think if he goes 2-2, the fanbase will be indifferent. 3-1 they are back on the hype train. 4-0, all hell breaks loose here. 1-3, a good portion of the fans start to turn on him. 0-4, he's on the chopping block for his next loss.

Well I mean, the season isn't over and we lost to the 2 best teams in the West.

We also weren't supposed to be that great this year with everyone we lost.

People forget Petrino also had losses like this even in his best year.

i'm going to post my reply from a thread yesterday since i think it's pretty apt for the convo.

quote:

Since we're all just shooting the shite, I wouldn't trade him I don't think for any of the other sec coaches outside of a younger Saban (he's great but he's got nothing left to prove). Butch hasn't beaten a west team yet, what would our record be with him? Mcelwain may be ok but not sold more info needed, Kirby total crap shoot I'm fine letting someone else play, the rest nah. Gus I've never liked- however I didn't think was an idiot- but after watching him call the few games earlier in the season I question his mental state. Hugh's too sappy religious under investigationey for me, dan nah, Sumlin ok I guess but I don't see a real reason to covet. Is the conference overall lacking good coaching?

Bolded a section for you serrano.

Dont think Arkansas fans will be wanting to compare records of Petrino's 3rd and 4th years to Bert's. Granted, maybe Bert does go on a run to finish this year, who knows.

Bert doesnt deserve to be mentioned in the same breath

That's probably correct. If you expand it to add MSU and Mizzou - 3-3 in that stretch and I think folks are restless. Anything worse and his seat is hot and it could be worse with a total meltdown. 4-2 is status quo and 5-1 all ships have left the dock

Honestly Saturday was the first time it looked like serious regression had taken place on defense. I know Bama is good on offense but the Hogs D looked hopeless. Gave up the outside, couldn't get off blocks, tackling was shitty, coverage was awful... it looked bad on defense.

He also had the players for his system.

The jury is still out but I'm not off the train yet.

ETA: And nowhere did I say Bielema is a better coach than Petrino.

Besides that reply. Critique him. All I saw in all that is "I wouldn't take him over the others". But what I want to see is thus far in his career with that SEC record, are you satisfied?

Tennessee would be 0-2 in conference too if their first 2 games were A&M and Bama.

I think Arky is on par with MSU in terms of program ceilings. With that said, I think Kiffin would do well there. He is a fantastic play caller, and could mask their below average talent they will consistently get. They could get him at a great deal right now, too.

I think Kiffin could have rang up 800 yards of offense had he not dialed it back after going up 42-17.

What I replied to was someone saying

starting to wear thin with more Hog fans.

to which I said

quote:

Yes and I have no problem admitting that.

So nope, definitely not satisfied at all. I like him as a person (altho sometimes i think he needs to shut up) but I'm definitely not sold on him. If we suck it up the rest of the year, I might be fine just cutting the strings.

I agree with this. Enos is good at what he does. Robb Smith on the other hand......

Arky's problem was they were forced to throw the ball 61 times because their defense was about as stout as wet tissue paper. All while the most effective aspect of their passing game, play-action, was rendered useless.
