Sounds about right. I have a long rant about transit planning that I'll probably move to SECROT later tonight. This shite always gets me going

I've lived in central Texas for 50 years and I will admit that there are some roving gangs in Austin right now that you just don't want any part of ...

There's the vegan yoga set and they have significant heat with the paleo cross-fitters, and if you get mixed up with either you are in trouble. You never know when one of those motherfrickers is going to trap you in the street and tell you all about how they started fermenting their own kombucha, or how they only eat meat from one of the kosher ranchers and which one of the farmer's markets they prefer.

There's also the other gangs. Absolutely ruthless. Scores of software developers, video game artists/designers, and infosec neckbeards. Truly terrifying in their inability to engage in even trivial conversation outside of their normal scope of work and/or gaming. You don't want to make eye contact with them - luckily you can't even if you try.

Finally we have the Californian transplants. These people will trap you at every turn to tell you that they sold their shanty in LA county and bought a modest 14,000 sq ft home with helipad, attached personal lazy river/water park in West Austin -- all with half of their shanty proceeds. Then they will tell you about how they miss everything about California until your body goes numb in an attempt to shut itself down to avoid hearing about In-n-Out and Fat Burger and their shock at their electric bills being higher in a house 14x as large as their previous.

Can't believe there are baws that actually think Austin is dangerous

FFS, where do baws go when you travel? Have you never been to Mexico? London, Amsterdam, Czech, Morroco, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, India, Greece? Anywhere in Asia that isn't Japan or Singapore?

wow, I have to assume you have not been in Austin in years. UT is not a major destination in the city, it is a small campus in a very large metro area of 2.3M people.

For those of you who have never been to Austin before, you're going to absolutely love it. At first glance you'll love the "downtown vibe" generated by a University that is just a stone's throw from a 5 lane highway - talk about scenic. As you stroll down Sixth Street, dodging bottles and drunks, you'll immediately be captivated by the distinct aroma coming from the nearby homeless encampment - compliments of the Austin City Council. You'll enjoy quick access to shopping while tailgating since you'll probably be set up in a convenience store parking lot. And, finally, let's not forget the gameday experience where you'll get to spend an afternoon with somewhere around 50,000 disinterested tu fans who accidentally stumbled into the game while looking for the "c%#@s not glocks" rally.

I'm a SA native and UT alum. How on Earth do you get a 2.3M population figure? Do you think SA is a suburb?

Edit: looking it up, the figure is still laughable, considering it includes the following:

Austin (still less than 1M, but maybe larger after census, and daily Cali refugees)
Round Rock
Cedar Park
San Marcos
Georgetown
Pflugerville
Hutto
Buda
Kyle
Leander
Lockhart

I mean, I don't want to argue it to death, but c'mon. You think the people of San Marcos consider themselves Austinites, simply because Austin has burst a bit at the seams? Austin was founded in 1839, and San Marcos in 1851. I think Demographers have stretched the definition of suburbs and greater "city" areas past the point of all reasonable imaginings. But okay.

It’s not safe. Needles, crap in the streets, homeless/crazy druggies everywhere. Shootings downtown. Defunded police dept. Californians everywhere. All the usual problems of a Democratic liberal government. The San Francisco

Austin is a fun and unique place, and it earns its "weird" moniker, which it seems to wear with stubborn pride.

They are a middling to larger town now, stuck with mindless progressive and parochial leadership, which wants to maintain it's small town mindset while ignoring urban growth planning, so it's traffic for it's size is a gob-smacking nightmare.

But the charm buys it a lot of grace. For SEC fans going there the first time, make sure to see Town Lake and Zilker Park, get out to eat at Matt's El Rancho (Not SA Tex-Mex, but decent), and nearby Matt's for you C&W music fans go to the Broken Spoke and dance to live bands, an amazing rundown building but truly historical space, and you can slide on the old dance floor just fine. You can hear a lot of other posters talk about Central Texas BBQ, and I've already seen a thread on it here, but we sure can do it right.

For those who have a little time to go further out after your first trip, try heading down I-35 to a quaint little old German town called New Braunfels, where the cold artesian springs in Indian summer can be quite an experience that us river tube folks can attest. Afterwards, drive a little past that on I-35 to San Antonio and you can test what REAL Tex-Mex is supposed to taste like. A little place called Jacala's (On West Avenue in NW SA) is a real winner. Make sure you get a platter with puffy tacos.

There, that's a start. Texas is a big and amazing place. Hope you enjoy it...

Austin is a shithole. Bad politics, terrible weather, homeless everywhere, constant road construction and traffic issues, etc.

Baton Rouge isn't much better. Nashville and Gainesville have their problems. Most of the SEC sites are safe little vistas.

You tell us. Texas was one of the last two teams to integrate black players in the entire SWC. Should we expect any more "issues"?

Its run by a bunch of idiots who are trying to destroy the place faster than San Fran or Seattle for the prize. This is just one of many stupid decisions they’ve made.

Austin isn't what it was 20 years ago but LSU fans certainly should be shutting their holes. That place is FAR FAR FAR worse and generally TU fans are very hospitable with Texan charm.

The bigger issue is how they perceive themselves in the world as a whole. A large portion of stuck up fans that believe they are an ivy league school with Bama like success on the football field.

Easy to laugh at them and most will host a good pre-game beer with visitors!
