"The best part of Texas I ever saw was visiting the Gulf Coast, the rest of it not so much."
Central Texas Hill Country (San Antonio to Austin, West of I-35), From Bandera/Pipe Creek/Boerne/Fredericksburg/New Braunfels up to the West side of Austin are beautiful. Won't even bother to mention the BBQ and Tex Mex.
Big Bend and Davis mountains are gorgeous and largely unspoiled.
If you think only the coast is good here, you haven't seen nearly as much of it as you think, or you judgement meter is rather out of touch. I'll let you and others decide which of those possibilities is true.

The land thieves by a long shot. OU annoys, but they have earned respect. They are our rival.
Lil' brother is just that. Sad and pathetic, +mostly delusional. Pooooor Aggy.

Hopefully we can see Ryan WIngo and Kaliq Lockett do some damage together for a few years. Will be handy at least for a newbie Manning QB in 2025.
Sark will have some real chess pieces at his disposal, at a minimum.
Welcome to the 40 acres, Kaliq!

Blacks is the best (widely known) in Lockhart, started in 1932. It has opened other branches since then then (New Braunfels, Austin, San Marcos).
But there are a handful of other spots (I haven't been to all of them):
Lockhart BBQ places
But we are all describing different things as the same. Much of the deep South loves putting pigs in the ground, and though I'm not a big fan of pulled pork, the best I ever tried was in Alabama.
But when you slow cook and smoke brisket, and/or ribs until they are so tender the meat all but melts in your mouth, you realize that nothing else is ever gonna taste that good. I've had some damn good pork ribs even here in Houston, but when you do it right, pig just doesn't stand up to beef BBQ'd that proper way. I feel sorry that so many SEC brethren have apparently never had beef BBQ that way. I have a feeling we'd change your minds. But to each their own. We can all get fat in our favorite ways...

Answer: Lockhart, Texas (not terribly far from Austin)
re: Question for Texas and Oklahoma fans

LSU has surprised me the most. They are often funny and grasp irony well. They also clearly enjoy poking the goofy sad inferiority complex cult that is A&M. Gotta love them for that. They are a pleasant surprise.
GA and AL are the most arrogant, but as they have earned it, can't say as I find it overly irritating.
Can't see as I find any fanbase routinely having more class than all the others. If I had to pick one, Florida posters (minus the more obvious alters) seem fairly grounded to reality, and grant points as warranted. But the sample size isn't that high - which makes me wonder, why are there seemingly so few regular FL posters on rant considering their size?
Until lately, I wouldn't have said that TN is the ultimate leader in being totally unhinged, but they must have recently put something odd in the water. Was the men's CWS win thunder stealing via the Texas hiring of Shlongnoozle really the cause of their seeming near psychotic break? I truly don't get it...but for now the Unhinged Award is sooo totally the TN biggest win. If they keep up this strident passive aggressive inferiority complex, they might just become Aggie North. That's even taking into account their many obvious alters.
Okies are Okies. At least we can respect the Okies wins.
gAggies remain the BAS lil' cult brothers we know and...annoyingly tolerate. Little ankle biting dogs come to mind as comparison.
I look forward to a enjoying a fun new year in a sports loving conference.

My gut is thinking 10-2. My heart is hoping for only a UGA loss, or even more a dream scenario of breaking into a new division with an undefeated season.
But I'd happily settle for 10-2, and a playoff berth.

We definitely wouldn' even try on Saturday so Friday lunch and/or dinner is when we'd want to hit one of the good BBQ joints. Between franklins or terry black which would we have better luck at you think?
You'll always be able to get into Terry Black's, the food is good, and they won't run out of BBQ. Franklin's is a small hole in the wall in a landlocked location just East of I-35, so they cook as much as they can on their smoker, and the people lineup before they open and they sell it until they run out. I prefer Franklin's, but opinions vary, and they are both good. On a trip where you have much too see, I don't think I'd make Franklin's a priority the first time. Maybe if you make it back to Austin again some day.
Sadly, my favorite all time Tex-Mex place (Jacala's) burned down a couple years back. :banghead:
But here are a couple...
Rosario's - there are two in town, the one South is closer to downtown
LINK
If you want Fajita's in a lovely location, with the best fresh flour tortillas made constantly, there is Alamo Cafe:
LINK
Ironically, the Chicken Fried Steak there is also great, and big.
Finally, if you are on the Riverwalk and feeling playful, drop in for a drink at Dick's Last Resort.
LINK
Or go up in the nearby Tower of America's to the bar and have a drink just before sundown. Everyone should do that at least once. The food there is fine but overpriced, and most people dress up a bit, but the whole restaurant rotations 360 deg in an hour--so it's nice. If you go, the same applies, go there about an hour before sundown.

I'll see if we can maybe make a stop. I guess I might should have included info abotu our group in the OP. My wife and I are in our mid/late 30s and in SA it'll jsut be us 2. When we get to Austin we'll be joined by another couple that age. In SA I might can get my wife to pop into a bar Thursday evening. In Austin I don't know if the group is going to be interested much. Our partying hard days are well behind us, but we do all drink so any bar we stop into would probably be a more laid back one if possible.
Well, in case you can't do Broken Spoke, just NW of San Antonio is a little town called Helotes. There is this little place called Floores Country Store. I've danced outside under the stars many a time there:

Live music and dancing there all the time still. You can even eat there, same as at Broken Spoke.
I'm old enough to remember Willie Nelson being out there. This is worth the read (didn't want to post a paragraph of the legends who have played there):

If you were coming on another day, I'd second Franklin's for BBQ. But there is a line there always, and they often sell out by early-mid afternoon on Saturdays on a normal weekend. With the Longhorns game there, and with the Grand Prix, you don't stand a chance on this trip.
I'm a native San Antonian, so I suggest you'll get better Tex-Mex there than you can get anywhere in Austin. That said, for future reference you can do a 2-fer in Austin if you eat decent (not great) Tex-Mex at Matt's El Rancho, and then you will be just down the road from a Texas tradition, the Broken Spoke. Live Country bands, and women who love to C&W dance. Bar is lovingly broken down wooden place brimming with performers you'd never believe have made it through those doors to perform there. Make a few minutes to turn left when you enter and see all the memorabilia they have left behind from their performances. It's an institution, and I dance there every time I make it back to Austin.
For San Antonio, visit the Japanese Tea Gardens in Brackenridge Park in downtown area, El Mercado for late night Tex-Mex/bakery at Mi Tierra, and Tink-a-taco for breakfast Carne Guisada with cheese (and/or egg) tacos. Detailed Tex-Mex food suggestions in SA would take it's own whole message, and varies on the kind of Mexican food you like.
So that's a few ideas along with the obvious tourist-y stuff as a start.

"I always felt, for many reasons, that Texas made the most sense in the B1G.
I am optimistic about one thing. For generations, loser institutions that can't win anything that matters have been crying about (and blaming) Texas. I am hoping that the tradition rich, proud and successful member institutions of a conference like the SEC will have some dignity and personal accountability. That will be refreshing."
Sneezy, I kinda agree with the sentiment offered. Yet old Pac-12 and B1G used to be lever reasons why Texas admin acted too snooty for our own britches, as time has proven to our own detriment. The endless talk about the value of peer academic institutions, AAU membership, etc., being too important to discount had some merit, but the travel/logistics up and down the athletic ladder and across all sports always made those PAC-12/B1G options untenable.
So I am very happy to have Texas in the SEC now, especially from an athletic competitiveness and geographic sense.
However Sneezy, we didn't leave them all behind. Misery and blAme&M are sadly amongst us once again.

"You may all call us UT. You may call Texas anything but UT.
Texas may call us UT or just Dad."
Your attempts at trolling are so very sad and tired. As many Texas posters have implied again and again, it doesn't really add much or detract much from Longhorn alums or fans lives who "owns" the UT moniker. But as it appears so unbelievably important to 10RC fans here, as evidenced by your posts, I suggest we say sure...you do you, K?

Thanks BigBro, that helps fill in some gaps nicely for me. And it is a great start!
Let's see if any others have their favorites to offer, and why they like them.
I've always been a 90+% football guy, but since the SEC has such a track record with baseball (esp. recently), seems a good time to take a crash course. I am picking up a fair amount by osmosis on the main boards, but it is nice to be able to easily ask such questions here amongst fellow travelers.

With all apologies to BigBro, who asked a similar question. I hoped BB fan posters might offer their reasoning, rather than just offering names--many of which I'm not even familiar with, and how likely they think their choice could be had.

Posted by UrTexHorn on 6/25/24 at 1:12 pm
I've had fun watching little bro whine about Schloss, and I have some wonder why people seem to dislike Vitello so very much, even some Tenner fans when they are being candid.
So from a blank sheet of paper, who would the real baseball fans among my fellow Horn brethren pick if you could from the college coaches out there (employed currently or not) to run the Longhorn BB program now that we've properly run Pierce off?
