The question mark with Harsin will be crootin'. I don't really question his coaching as he's made good hires so far.

If he finishes 15-20 nationally in recruiting every year, we will be 8-4. Gus averaged somewhere around 10th nationally during his tenure and still couldn't break the 8-4 hump. I don't see AU doing better than 10th nationally, so it's going to come down to whether Harsin can outcoach Gus.

Maybe he can, maybe he can't. Either way, I will be really surprised if he is a step down from Gus. AU's offenses became way too predictable with Gus, hopefully Harsin and Bobo can change that.

As a coach?
Solid offensive system
Proven he can put points on the board
Brought in folks to run his O and assembled a solid D staff

Issues I see
Never been the man in this type of situation
How will he handle losing?
How will he handle winning?
How will he handle the pressure?
Can he recruit at a higher level than he has shown before?
Can he avoid the pitfalls of overzealous fans and keep a thick skin?
Can the fan base handle the 5-7/6-6/7-5 type seasons that are coming the next couple of years and still support the program while it rebuilds?

Pruitt was the 1st guy I really bought into as a head coach in this endless chain of coaches of late. I thought he had the mindset and mentality to pull it off. Kiffin needed to grow up, Doolander was way over his head, Butch was a used car salesman and TOXIC, Heupel is not SEC ready. We shall see if he can figure it out.

Opinions? Spring football hasn't even started. What is there to even have an opinion on?

Thank you, Smokeyone, for saving me from having to type all that out myself.

Both coaches have FCS records and have hired staffs, as well as done recruiting. You have no opinion on any of that?

I think Harsin is in over his head and won't be able to elevate recruiting past the level Gus had it at which is what we need.

I was so tired of Gus, but thought the only way we should have fired him was if we had a solid verbal from Cristobal. None of the other targets were any better than Gus was.

I disagree Foy. No one and I mean NO ONE.. Thought Auburn would have a smooth transition after that knee jerk, trigger pull. I get a laser focus Pat Dye vibe out of Harsin. I just do. He will build a scary monster out of that soft mess Gustav left.

Auburn's coaches have had a history of being successful within their first couple seasons then falling to mediocrity afterwards till they're canned (with only a couple exceptions).

Pat Dye: 3rd Season goes 11-1
Terry Bowden: 1st Season goes 11-0
Gene Chizik: 2nd Season goes 14-0
Gus Malzhan: 1st Season goes to a National Championship

Maybe Harsin follows the trend? We'll see.

Maybe. That would be great, but just don't see how he can upgrade recruiting.

Everyone would make hay about Malzahn's top 10 or top 15 recruiting classes, but people don't realize what kind of talent disparity there was every time we stepped on the field with Bama, UGA and LSU. It's a miracle he ever beat any of those teams once.

Are you a fan of both schools? Undergrad at one and grad at the other?

Cautiously optimistic.

I’ve said all along, Harsin is a high risk/high reward hire. Despite what the usual suspects here say, there weren’t any obvious choices available out there. I think we went hard for Cristobal and got turned down, and Napier wanted more than we were willing to spend to give up a shot at his dream job in Red Stick. Harsin gives us the best bang for the buck. At the very least, he breaks the long-standing “good ol boy” types we’ve hired pretty much since before I was born.

That said, I don’t expect much from us this fall. 6-6 is a distinct possibility, although I like to think that’s our floor. 8-4 is probably our ceiling.

I think 2022 will begin to show whether or not Harsin was a good hire.

Harsin seems hard-nosed with a big-time work ethic. If he can fill some glaring holes that Gus left, I'm optimistic we will be much more competitive. Of course he will get a pass his first year with the mess that Gus left, but I do expect him to have a better year than if Gus was still at the helm.

THIS! It may take a couple of seasons, but I believe we will see immediate improvement over what we've been used to seeing. Playing calling has got to be better, along with QB development. Not sure how he can make it worse.

Gus was extremely limited on staffing. Appears that few established, good coaches wanted to work for him. That's how you end up with loyal, former players, and not necessarily good coaches. I have no doubt, we will see a much tougher attitude, at the very least.

Pretty sure it’s all about player development since Bama and UGa continue to miraculously get all the top recruits without any scrutiny. Our 3*’s are going to have to out perform the 5*s. I believe that is the reason Harsin was selected. He is used to doing more with less.

Tubs was kinda known for this, but out of necessity since he didn't seem to want to hit the recruiting trail very hard.
