I know exactly what the comment was, and again he was the was a top 3 coach in the country in 2021.
2017- finished 7th in East, missed SEC Tourny! #15 recruiting class. Year before Vitello
2018- 29-27 (12-18) 1st year after taking over worst team in East that won 7 SEC games year prior. #6 recruiting class.
2019- 40-21 (14-16) Chapple Hill Regional 1st Regional since 2005. #9 recruiting class
2020- 15-2 best team Vitello has had and was canceled by COVID. #6 recruiting class
2021- 50-18 (20-10) 1st CWS appearance since 2005. #5 recruiting class! SEC East Champs
Anyone with a brain cell could see Vitello was building a monster at Tennessee and improved every year he was there. His recurring was also improving every year as soon as he took over a team with no MLB talent.
134- 68 record during that span. Had not been for COVID season, that 2020 team would have been the favorite to win the CWS that year with the amount of talent on that team.

No one credible ever reported this. No one other than Tennessee fans has even said it.
During LSU’s search, there was a week-long “lull” after the Bianco rumors died down. It turned out that the lull of no information was due to LSU waiting for Arizona’s season to end before formally interviewing Johnson.
LSU fans on this board used this lull of no information as an excuse to troll Vol posters like Serraneaux by saying LSU was in talks with Vitello. Some threads were started on Tiger Rant with fans debating whether or not they wanted Vitello as a coach. Nothing credible was ever reported regarding LSU talking to Vitello.

It's been three years, why do Tennessee fans need LSU to have wanted their coach?
Their insecurity is hilarious. I could understand it if Johnson had not been successful at LSU, but Jesus, the dude won the CWS in his 2nd season. No LSU fan is thinking “damn we should have hired Vitello, look at all the success we’d have”.

Wrong. Tony V. was never offered a job by LSU.
Maybe if you say it enough times, maybe someone might believe you
Maybe if you offer one credible source to suggest that he was, someone might believe you. Because I definitely trust mine.

Wow - Vitello contacted Laviolette? I wish our coach would do that as well.
Who says he hasn't?
Sarcasm my man.

How much you want to bet he doesn’t end his career at Tennessee? Ban bet?
He's only like 43. Ofcourse he could end up elsewhere. What do you wanna bet elcho doesn't retire there?

Then LSU is stupid. He’s the best coach in college baseball
I agree but you also have to be willing to take the personality. No different than hiring Urban Meyer in football or Calipari in basketball.
Some are willing to overlook the shenanigans, some are not.

It took him 7 years to have more than 2 wins in Omaha, that wouldn't work at LSU.
I think Vitello is a good coach for sure, but LSU was looking for more experience in 2021.
He'd only been a head coach for 3 years at that point.

We have to first beat Texas for Jace, then LSU

Happy to hire an up and comer and keep our roster intact.
All that Aggie money and you couldn't even hire somebody with a few skins on the wall........

Can you share a similar time where that didn’t work out at a major program? Bonus points if it was during the portal & on the same planet as A&M’s talent level.

Enjoy your success, as it will prove fleeting.

Odds are we will have more success than LSU in the next decade. Our coach is younger and better.

Johnson and Vitello are 1.5 years apart in age and each have 1 national title. Johnson has more wins in Omaha.

So you want to know if there’s a situation exactly like this in the last 3 years?
Maybe point me to a major program who hired internally after their HC walked to another program and it working out. I’ll wait.

He absolutely was a candidate but just because they were interviewed does not mean they got an offer. Of all the candidates, it is known the Earley blew away the interview portion. Of course he is most familiar with Aggieland.
Vitello would have been a dream. No doubt. We had to approach him. But there was no way he would leave unless he was an insane psychopath like Schloss.
Me love me some Vitello.

Programs like that don't usually lose their head coach.

Mississippi State football hiring Arnett after Leach passed away. It just doesn’t work, no matter the sport.
