He's been a head coach for like 6 games in his career and was basically handed the keys to a ferrari. Note: I am NOT saying he sucks or he's incompetent or any other disparging insult. I'm simply saying we have no clue the limits of his abilities until we see him without an elitely stacked roster that someone else primarily recruited.
Chizik looked great at AU in year 2. Larry Coker looked incredible in year 1. Orgeron looked amazing with an offense full of NFL all stars and a coordinator currently HCing an NFL team. Of course we see what happened to those guys once their gravy trains left. That is simply TBD on golding and we won't know until a couple years from now.

A couple of things are now painfully evident in all this.
The first is this. Pete Golding took notes when he was under Saban's tutelage. Kiffin? Well not so much.
The second thing. Well it's fairly obvious now that Nicholas Lou Saban absolutely hates the University of LSU Fighting Tigers. He went above and beyond in doing his part to afflict them with Lane Kiffin.

I'm sticking with my original offseason prediction:

Pete's problem never was knowing the X's and O's. Actually, that is what impressed Saban so much that he hired him. Saban said he knows the X's and O's of defense better than anyone that was that age he'd ever known. So he hired him. The problem with Pete, was always when the original game plan wasn't working and he had to adjust. He constantly struggled to adjust. Though on a white board he could "wow" you to death at how much X's and O's he knew, when the bullets starting firing in a game, he struggled to adjust when the original game plan wasn't working.

And Pete convinced Lacy and TC to stay in the offseason.
