Jackie Sherill had quite the impact at AtM & State. He could be in the conversation

His time at aggy doesn't count since that was outside the SEC. Looks like he was 75–75–2 for State. Is that really what belongs on a top 10 list for the conference?

You can't craft a list of the top ten SEC coaches that leaves Steve Spurrier out under any criteria.

Even assuming you wanted to base it on national championships alone, that wouldn't work, because there haven't been ten SEC coaches that have won more than one.

Y'all shouldn't deal so much in absolutes.

Frank Thomas would be the best coach in Auburn history and it isn’t close.

Frank Thomas’ record at Alabama was 115-24-7. That is a 82% winning percentage. He won four SEC titles and two national titles in 15 seasons. He never had a losing season, so he wouldn’t have been a good fit at Auburn.

Miles has been blackballed from college football. It is easy to leave him off.

How about top 10 SEC coaches who won championships at schools which were NOT their alma mater.

See how easy that was?

Try and stay on topic, which was "the Top 10 greatest head coaches in SEC football history."

You shouldn't waste any more time defending your idiocy on the first page.

9. Frank Thomas - Alabama

Interesting inclusion.

Won 4 conference titles and had 2 undefeated seasons. One of those, 1934, won the Rose Bowl by beating then-undefeated Stanford; 1945 only had one game within 2 TDs (Georgia, 28-14) - #1 in the country in total defense, #2 in total offense.

quote:

His SEC winning % (minimum 80 games coached) is 5th all time:
1. Nick Saban - .849
2. Kirby Smart - .848
3. Urban Meyer - .813
4. Gene Stallings - .810
5. Frank Thomas - .806
6. Paul "Bear" Bryant - .797
7. Bob Neyland - .780
8. Les Miles - .770
9. Allyn McKeen - .764
10. John Vaught - .745

Why 80 games? That's the threshold for every coach on the original list (Urban Meyer with that many games). All other coaches have that or more. Thomas is 3rd among coaches with at least 100 games.

quote:

Conference titles by coach (Thomas is tied for 7th):
1. Paul "Bear" Bryant - 13
2. Nick Saban - 11
3T. Vince Dooley - 6
3T. Johnny Vaught - 6
3T. Steve Spurrier - 6
6. Robert Neyland - 5
7T. Pat Dye - 4
7T. Frank Thomas - 4
7T. Wally Butts - 4
7T. Kirby Smart - 4

He does not have a poll era title; his 1934 undefeated team pre-dated the poll era by 2 years. His team finished #2 in 1945; Army, going undefeated against a great schedule (and having won a war) finished #1.

I wasnt super aware of how dominant Thomas was at Bama. He would be talked about and respected so much more if Bama dropped their claim on the 1941 title. That natty claim makes people discredit so much if Bamas early success

Sadly I have no voice in that matter and it's not going to change the team I cheer for, but I do agree with your sentiment.

Spurrier won 11 games at South Carolina 3 times in a row. It’s the football equivalent of parting the Red Sea

they've only had three 9+ win seasons in their entire football history without Steve Spurrier as their coach.

I would switch Dooley and Vaght prob but otherwise, also surprised Calip is not on there with all he has done at UK and Arky.

I asked Grok to rank them based on conference wins, conference winning percentage, conference championships, national championships, and major bowl wins.

4. Robert Neyland - Tennessee
5. Johnny Vaught - Ole Miss
6. Kirby Smart - Georgia
7. Vince Dooley - Georgia
8. Urban Meyer - Florida
9. Frank Thomas - Alabama
10. Pat Dye - Auburn

Les Miles career record was108-73. At LSU he won two SEC titles and one national championship. He is unemployable due to sexual misconduct.

There are more than 10 SEC coaches who have a superior resume and don’t have that baggage.

Interesting little fact about MoLester, in 2013 LSU banned Les Miles from being alone with female students.
