America's Future In College Sports is the SEC, Which Is Not Good For America's Colleges
Somebody sure is mad....but then says this:

The author is right, and this is one reason why Texas and Oklahoma should stay in the Big 12.

The author went to Kansas, which would tie Missouri as #9 in the SEC in the annual rankings grift. So…
As much as SEC expansion absolutely sucks for the original ten in terms of games played against one another, it’ll be a great thing if it decreases the number of programs fielding D1 sports programs. Football/basketball/sports in general at ~80% of these schools are completely pointless and only serve to water down the overall product.

College football has become the NFL-lite. All its pageantry and uniqueness is gone, now. Sad.

In his novel "The Twelve," Justin Cronin used a pretty good description:
He was describing an unnamed school in the midwest, but the descriptions fits several SEC schools just as well.

Sports dominance tends to be transitory, which most writers of puff pieces like this don't tend to get. The Ivy League was far and away the dominant collegiate conference for DECADES. Things change.
Right now the SEC is on top and I'm going to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts thank you very much.

Texas helps academically - #21 in the U.S. and #7 among U.S. public universities

This sounds like it was written by a disgruntled big ten fan. If it were any other conference dominating college football or baseball everything would be A ok.
I wish the other regions of the country were more competitive. Dominating College football, by one conference, is not good for the sport in the long run.
As far as college football souring the academic atmosphere at a university, remember there are only 85 guys on scholarship and all of them are not academic cripples, by any means. Exposure to TV brings greater interest from people around the country and guess what - applications to attend said Universities goes up.

Ranked below 100th...
How many P5 schools are in the top 100?
There are 392 universities on that list; the author seems to feel there's only merit in being in the top quarter of universities.
Like some hiring manager is looking at someone's resume and going down the list, only to see they got their degree from Boise State and going, "Oh damn son, I loved your resume and attitude, but BSU is in the bottom 100 colleges. Get the frick out of my office."
At the end of the day, what your degree in is infinitely more important than where you got it (with some rare exceptions of course); otherwise you might as well tell working adults going back to school to not bother. How dare they go to that local community college to finish their associates. Didn't they know it was ranked #268th among CCs????

The author is an alum of both Kansas and TCU, and an adjunct prof at the latter.

Academic snobbery at its best, and it completely ignores the rankings and perceptions associated with the individual colleges and schools within each university (with a large chunk of them being among the nation's best). If you would turn your nose-up at a degree from some of the top programs in the country then you're a damn fool.
