The best coaches create consistently good teams regardless of roster/coaching turnover, and even sometimes do “better” and exceed expectations in seasons when you think they’ll struggle with the turnover.
A&M is still looking for that coach. There was a moment when many thought Elko had the potential to be that, but it’s appearing maybe not. All that said, He’s not dead yet, let’s see what he does the rest of this season, this offseason, and next year.

If you’ve followed football for a long time, A&M was middle of the pack in the Big 12.
Yes they won the Big 12 championship in the late 90s and they fielded a few competitive teams under RC Slocum, but the Horns have always had the edge over them.
A&M is still competitive, but they’re about on par with how they were in the Big 12.

1. I say they keep Elko.
2. Save the buy out money.
3. Invest it until his contract is out.
4. Let the laughter die down.
5. Save all that new contract money.
6. Hire a no name that will still get you your 8 wins for much less and..
7. Laugh all the way to the bank.

They missed their window.
They have a massive amount of money.
They are located close to one of the largest metro areas in the country (Houston) which produces massive amounts of football talent
They have a cult like obsession of fanbase loyalty.
They should have bamas trophy case.
There was a brief moment in time where they had a chance to ascend to the heights their program should be at.
They were the only Texas school in the SEC at the height of SEC power. UT was down and down bad. They were finally had the “cool” factor with Sumlin and manziel.
And yet they still Aggied it.

The only time in their history where they were consistently better was 1984-94 when they were rampantly cheating so much they got put on probation thrice their coach resigned in shame and they almost got the death penalty.
Unfortunately for them they fled the BDF right before they could have had a 2nd run 2012-21 so instead of getting an honest 8-2 streak in they got a DNP.
Now things have regressed to the mean and hopefully it is several years before they pick up the next dub.

your edit is the most important part. you have a prove defensive coach as the head coach. that and $ will allow you guys to have a good defense every year.
with elko, the relationship between the OC and the starting qb will dictate how far the individual teams go. Klein and Reed understood each other. your OC now may be a good play caller, but he has no recognition of what Reed does well or what he does poorly.

QBs have been leaving that program from way back. Real QBs don't want to play for aggy after getting a taste of what is going on there.

Under former head coach Kevin Sumlin (2012–2018), several quarterbacks transferred away from Texas A&M, most notably during the tumultuous 2015 season.
Kyler Murray: A five-star recruit who transferred after one season (2015) to Oklahoma, where he won the Heisman Trophy before being drafted first overall by the NFL.
Kyle Allen: A five-star recruit and returning starter who transferred after two seasons (2014–2015) to Houston.
Kenny Hill: The starting quarterback who transferred to TCU after the 2015 season, following his benching for Allen.
Matt Davis: A highly touted recruit who transferred to SMU in 2013 after the emergence of Johnny Manziel.
Matt Joeckel: Transferred to TCU while Hill was still on the roster, before Hill later joined TCU as well.
Jameill Showers: The initial starting quarterback who transferred to UTEP before Sumlin gave Manziel the starting job.
Tate Martell: A highly ranked recruit who decommitted and transferred to Ohio State without ever playing for Texas A&M.
Jimbo Fisher recruited several quarterbacks at Texas A&M who eventually transferred away from the program. Key quarterbacks who left include:
Zach Calzada: Fisher’s first QB recruit saw limited play initially, took over as the starter in 2021, and later transferred to another team.
Haynes King: Fisher’s second QB recruit served as backup before suffering a season-ending leg injury in 2021; he transferred to Georgia Tech and helped lead them to a winning season.
Max Johnson: An injured LSU transfer who played under Fisher before moving on to other programs.
Eli Stowers: Played as a backup in 2021 and 2022 before transferring to NMSU and later Vanderbilt.
Mike Elko has Conner Weigman transfered out.
