Auburn is very good compared to current teams, but historically not in the same universe of the great teams from the past. It's a different game with almost none of the top talent playing more than one season, and some not playing any at all.

So Johni Broome has only been there a year? The whole AU team is senior led. This is his 3rd season and is one of the best in basketball. That one and done hasn't been a factor for a few years now. I can't believe you made me stick up for AU

They were a doormat before Pearl got there.

How is Houston so highly rated? I don't get it. ESPN's Basketball Power Index has them ranked #1. Yet they've only played four teams that are currently ranked in the top 25, and they lost three of those games. What am I missing?

BPI is an advanced metric like Torvik or KenPom, not necessarily a measure of résumé. Just like those they love Houston’s monstrous efficiency.

They are senior lead by guys who are not talented enough to make it in the NBA. In the past, you had juniors and seniors who played together for 3-4 years, and they were high NBA picks. It's not a knock on Auburn, it's a fact that the most talented players don't stay in college for more than a year.
Look at guys like Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon, who each played three years of college ball. Today, they would only play one.

I don’t care what anyone says: I truly think this might be the year Pearl takes Auburn past the first weekend.

The advanced metrics and ranking systems obsession with Houston the past 4-5 years is so over the top.
I mean Sampson has had damn good teams but the way they get their knob slobbed by Kenpom/Torvik/etc is annoying. They’d get beat by every single team on that list

Kinda like he did in 2019 when Auburn went to the Final Four and was one bad foul call away from playing for the national championship?

He'll never be accused of inventing the Rubik's cube.

he fact that three teams from 2025 are in the top ten since 2002 is a warning that either college basketball is imbalanced towards a handful of teams in a historically unprecedented way or something is going on with the data to inflate rankings to this point in the season.
For example what has Houston done to merit being a top ten all time team?
Four losses YTD already in a bad B12, with two being to unranked or barely ranked teams doesn't scream all time great or better than teams like 2018 Villanova.
And Duke gets a ton of credit for knocking off Auburn, but lost to Kentucky and Kansas and are going to go the entire season in the ACC without playing a ranked team as of right now.
How can you claim a team is top 5 all time who hasn't played a schedule which would let you test them? To me they're an exceptionally talented, but very young team playing a glorified mid-major schedule this year.
