Got this idea from a post on another board, so not taking full credit here, but what about a 16 team playoff this year replacing the CCG's and 4 team playoff. Have to say, this looks way more enticing than what we will get this weekend...

To take any personal bias out, simply the Top 16 teams in the CFP playoff poll as of today:

Rd 1 of playoffs:
(16) Iowa @ (1) Ohio State
(15) ND @ (2) LSU
(14) Michigan @ (3) Clemson
(13) Oregon @ (4) UGA
(12) Bama @ (5) Utah
(11) Auburn @ (6) OU
(10) Penn St @ (7) Baylor
(9) UF @ (8) Wisconsin

That's an awesome slate of games, can you imagine Florida playing at Madison Wisconsin in mid-December?

Well duh... You dont remember the last time they played utah?

In all seriousness that is a pretty cool list of games but I think 8 should be max

So... just leave the G5 schools completely out of it?

You’re damn right.

I don’t see a G5 in the Top 16.

From OP:

There's no G5 schools in the Top 16.

UCF would have made it in last year, by comparison. In fact, as an 8 seed they would have hosted #9 Washington.

Keep it at 4. There’s barely 4 deserving teams this year as it is.

But should as a Bama fan we will take that 12-5 matchup

Yeah, I skimmed right over that.

That's what I get for skimming.

Sorry about that.

I mean, this is what a playoff is for, determining who really is deserving by letting it play out on the field and there's almost no controversy in who gets selected when you expand it so much.

Really tough to only pick 4/130 teams. Less hard to do 16/130. Or at least nobody feels bad for team #17.

FCS does a 24 team playoff with even less total team than FBS.

I'm just all for more meaningful games in the end, rather than pick 4 and the rest play in bowl games nobody seems to care about any more.

The G5 should have their own playoff. There is too big a gap now between the P5 and G5.

First, they'd need to shuffle a few teams from G5 to P5 and from P5 to G5.

You're just now realizing the possibility of a 16-team playoff? It took seeing someone type it out?

I agree. Just need to drop to ten regular season games so it’s not too much on 18-22 yr olds.

I don't ever see them dropping the regular season back to 10 games due to $$$$ and the biggest % of D1 programs that never will get a shot at the playoffs. I see it going to 8 teams in the near future.

Yikes, if that's your argument... LSU is gonna lose to ND.

I think you insert the go5 with a caveat:

They must play in to the bottom slot with a separate 4 team play in. Since they play much weaker schedules, this evens things out and will get them some extra cash.

So:

Memphis vs
App

Boise vs
Cincy

I've been one of the biggest proponents of a large playoff for years now. I',m not talking about the idea itself, just this exact layout how it stands today with Top 16 using playoff rankings was a post I saw on another board and thought "damn those are some fun matchups".

Yeah, Iowa totally deserves a shot at the national championship!

Don't ruin the regular season by adding to the playoffs...

Some very cool matchups. Id worry about our southern boys playing in the Northern elements lol. But that spart of the game. Home Field advantage just like going to Foxborough or Green Bay.
