I live in Birmingham. Downtown has a lot of new bars, breweries, and restaurants but most people live well outside of Birmingham City limits in Homewood, Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Hoover, Chelsea, up north near Trussville, or out East in Irondale . Everything is really spread out.

Have you never been to Jackson, MS? I would say the biggest shitholes of the south are Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Jackson, Memphis and Little Rock. I would include St. Louis but that is not the south.

My SO’s son lives in Birmingham, works at the McWane Center. We spent last weekend there, first time there for pleasure for me. McWane is a treat, especially if you have kiddos. We enjoyed some good food. I’m not a fan of Alabama bbq, but Saw’s was excellent. Back Forty and Avondale breweries were great. Nice trip. I was pleasantly surprised by the city.

Saying this a decade ago may be correct, but saying it now is incorrect. Birmingham has improved a great deal as of late, and it's going to continue to improve for quite some time. I'm no fan of Birmingham or the surrounding area because I spent far too much time there, but what you're saying is just not accurate.

Right—there is a huge disparity in the City of Birmingham and "Birmingham."

There are over 1.1m people in the Birmingham metropolitan area.

Less than 18% of those (200k) actually live in Birmingham.

Mountain Brook, for example, has been consistently ranked as one of the best suburbs in the country, and it remains one of the wealthiest.

You need to look at the City Limits on a map. I know it is hard for someone from Ark to understand Urban Development, but I will try an bring it down to a 2nd Grade Level. The Metropolitain Birmingham area is still the largest by far in the state, it has increased over the years. Most of the population is moving to areas outside the city limits both North, East and South of Birmingham. You have people who now live in Mountain Brook, Homewood, Trussville, Hoover, Alabaster, Leeds and Pell City. Like most Southern Cities, the inner city is no longer a desirable place to live. They still shop and work in Birmingham. Actually downtown Birmingham is going through a renewal.

The same is basically true about Huntsville. A large percentage that work there live outside the city limits. Just try to travel I-565 at getting off time. Madison, Decatur, Arab, and Hartselle are just a few of the areas where people live and work in Huntsville.

Unlike Birmingham, Huntsville is attracting new Industry and is a relatively safe place to walk the streets and shop. It is not the lead item of the news of how many were shot and killed today as it seems to be In Birmingham

In addition to Redstone, and The Space Force; Huntsville has the new training facility for the FBI and a new automobile manufacturing facility employing several thousand. One trip through Huntsville will show why it has passed Birmingham.

Little Rock for instance, sort of the same thing, but Birmingham Alabama is the worst of the worst in the south on this topic

Not even close. Birmingham is one of the best kept secrets in the South. It is not a Steel or Industrial City that people who haven't a clue want to paint it. It is a major Banking and Medical Research city that doesn't really have any heavy industry. The restaurant scene is considered Top 10 in the country. Outside of the city there are major outdoor facilities to include lakes, mountains and major golf courses. There is more than just biracial diversity in culture in the city and there are many activities to match it.

Harry Rex van Winkle, while you have been asleep for the past twenty years Birmingham has managed to transform itself from armpit of the planet to an actually not bad city. I freely admit "actually not bad" is pretty faint praise, but compared to what it used to be Birmingham is a paradise.

I have lived in Huntsville working for a Defense Contractor. Huntsville is becoming a great little city, but it is totally different than Birmingham for the reasons you listed. Most of those people who live there are transplants from the North and West. Most kick and scream at the thought that they have to move to Alabama, but then realize how nice it is within 6 months of relocating. The only issue with Huntsville is it doesn't have the Southern Charm is used to have due to the population shift.

Rather folks from Alabama move there than the virus that is California license plates.

Madison is a wonderful place to live right now, IMO. Maybe one of the most up-and-coming cities in Alabama.

The others are more rural, bedroom communities if you want to get the family a little farther out and rural, while still being close.

That whole region is a great area of the state.

Atlanta
Montgomery
Birmingham
Jackson
Memphis
Little Rock
Baton Rouge
Mobile
New Orleans

You just have to know where to go to locate it now. The old town residential district will equal that of many larger southern cities. There is still a charm about downtown even with the modern style court house. Big Springs Park is a throwback to very old Huntsville And then there is Monte Santo. Huntsville has grown, especially in the 60’s and 70’s but preserved much of its history as it grew.

Well said. With the exception of perhaps of Little Rock. But let’s let people think that Birmingham has been lost since Bull Conner was running fire hoses. I don’t want this place becoming what they think is a Utopia.

In all seriousness, I have known people from all over the country that have moved to Alabama thinking we had nothing but dirt roads.

A number of those have since moved away because of the nature of their work, but all want to come back. The ones that are still here want to retire here (in part because of the low cost of living).

To each their own, though. I guess it just depends on what you value, and what type of community you want to be a part of.

I just know that a whole lot of people that come here don't want to leave.
