The inevitability of the College Football Playoff expanding has been embraced around every corner of the sport. From the academic ivory towers to the athletic departments to the locker room, an evolution of some type has long been an expectation.
Yahoo Sports spoke to more than a dozen stakeholders Monday on every side of the playoff decision – university officials, athletic directors, media executives and others around college sports. Amid those conversations, a surprise emerged — officials on campuses, in conference offices and in the television world have expressed an openness toward a 12-team playoff as the most likely result.
How would 12 teams work? The basic thought is automatic bids for the five major conferences — which also juices up their league title games as play-in games — and one for the highest ranked Group of Five champion. The other six spots would be at-large bids.
But the thought is that the first four teams would get a bye and teams No. 5 to No. 8 would host teams No. 9 through 12 at home sites.

If this format was in place in 2020, the SEC would have had four teams in.
Coastal Carolina at Texas A&M
winner plays Notre Dame
Indiana at Oklahoma
winner plays Ohio State
Iowa State at Florida
winner plays Clemson
Georgia at Cincy
winner plays Alabama

Lol Bama will be in the playoffs every year. This is not what college football needs.

But, but 2020* was a real season, LOL.

Yes, it’s a shame that teams like Auburn and LSU couldn’t find their way into the top 12...

Bama, Clemson, ND, OU, OSU, and probably UGA will make it every year, without a doubt
everyone who thought this would be a good idea

It won't really change much from a final champion point of view, but I do think the change would be healthy for the sport as a whole.

I disagree. CFB had two distinct advantages over the NFL, the importance of each and every regular season game, and the intense regional aspect. The Playoffs and open transfer market have pretty much eradicated those and turned CFB into NFL Lite. Why does a 3 or 4 loss team deserve a playoff spot?

I don't know what the proper number should be (was thinking more like 6), but I love the idea of rewarding the regular season with a bye.
Also a fan of teams hosting, although the weather might make it interesting.

My coach couldn't keep the team together through rough times. IT'S NOT FAIR!
Fixed for truth since it was sure as hell real to LSU fans until they started getting passed around like a G5 cupcake.

It's important for the sport in having visibility outside of the SEC and the B1G. Having a PAC champion and Group of 5 team will help promote CFB in other regions. Will they win? Hell, no. But at least they can no longer complain about being given a shot

Pretty much proves these dumbfricks are just looking for short term money without any real care of clue on the consequences or long term effects.
I wonder if they eat lunch with the folks over at Nascar.

LSU wouldn't have qualified in any event

That would have guaranteed A&M in the finals

I am all for expanding the playoffs but not with a bye for top seeds. It is beyond stupid they act like there is no data out there for playoffs. NFL, where the rosters are much fairer teams with a bye, have a 68% chance of winning the next game. It is also stupid money-wise, just have another game even if the chance of the number 1 or 2 seed is slightly less than 100% of winning. It is still better to watch a game than a forfeit(same thing as a bye). A bye makes no money. As far as too many games why is it too many for FBS but not FCS who are more students than most of the power 5 conference players are. I tutor some of the players in my college days. North Dakota State went 16-0 vs Bama's 13-0 so they can do it but Alabama can't? They will play how many games in the NFL but can't as college players? Move it to 16 games or 8 games lopsided brackets suck.

FCS only has a 10 game regular season.

2-0 for A&M

tOSU would have taken care of OU most likely.

Florida was so down by the end of the year, I might even pick ISU. Clemson beats either though.

We saw this right? UGA beat Cincy. UGA wasn't beating Bama.
Basically, we would have gotten the correct 4 in the final 4. Bama still comes out on top though.
