First, I've never seen anyone advocate against LSU getting night games. Moreover, I've not demanded LSU honor the Auburn-UGA game...ever.

I'm just pointing out that CBS circumstances impeding your "tradition" is a pretty silly reason to go all nihilist. I'm sure if they put it to a vote among SEC fans, people would have rallied to whatever LSU is upset about. This "us vs. them" thing is incredibly stupid in this context.

LSU bent the knee to TV executives as far back as 1984, when they hosted Notre Dame on ABC at 2:50 PM. 1985 was no different, when the Tigers hosted the Tide on the same network and at the same time.

Twisting the facts to make it seem like other SEC schools did this to LSU is bizarre and disingenuous.

Furthermore, I question the genuineness of this "night game tradition." Unless you're 55+, you likely don't remember a time when LSU only played night games.

Texas and OU cannot vote if they are not members of the conference. It doesn’t matter if they are potentially joining in a couple of seasons. There is nothing in the SEC bylaws that allows members of another conference to vote.

That's just what I had heard and I'm certainly not read up on the bylaws. I see now, though, that they were simply being consulted during the talks.

Yeah. The likelihood of a bunch of those games being immediately scheduled OOC seems pretty low.

understand the LSU thing but you played SEC/big OOC home games during the day pre-1992. 1984 Notre Dame - 2:50 PM 1985 Alabama - 2:50 PM 1986 Ole Miss - 2:30 PM 1987 Ohio State - 1:30 PM 1988 Ole Miss - 11:30 AM 1989 Tennessee - 12:00 PM Was that part of the college football association tv deal saga?
And pre 1992 Alabama chose to schedule extra SEC games in some seasons

So you can find away to keep your sacred traditions just like you used to

I'm just confused why this keeps getting pointed out as LSU being told what to do by the SEC when it had nothing to do with the league?

I guess you're ignoring the day games LSU played in the past, even before the original expansion.

If the games weren't televised, we didn't at home.

I'll put it to you this way. We've still only played about 125 or so day games in the history of Tiger stadium, TV forcing daytime slots has been around for over 30 years now, and we played out first night game in 1935. From 1935 until TV really kicked off in the late 80s with 3-4 being nationally televised a year, I bet you could count on one hand the number of daytime home games they played.

Oh I think most of us in this thread realize that and hated losing that as well. Same with Auburn/Tennessee for that matter.

But we've already wittled away 3rd and 4th level rivalries, which sucks but is what it is. We're talking about rivalries that these programs are built around. Georgia/Auburn is probably the most incestrial rivalry (no pun intended) in college football. Alabama/Tennessee was the game for Alabama people for 70 years.

These games are the fabric of southern football and we're gonna rip them up so Texas can play in Athens 3 times every 9 years instead of 3 times every 12 years.

It really sucks.

Damn son. You're spot on, but it's still sad.

Personally I'd prefer all LSU games being at night. I'd choose LSU After Dark over Pac12 After Dark every weekend.

Because it did have to do with the league….

Did lsu choose to play some non night games on its own before the SEC CBS contract? Yes

However, once the original CBS contract was signed lsu lost the right to choose. And it pissed lsu off, and nobody gave a frick about it besides lsu fans. Finally, around 2015, they amended the contract for LSU and protected our night games to a certain extent

I'd love to have that game back the day after turkey day.

I would too. Maybe it's selfish, but it was a lot easier for me to get to Little Rock or Baton Rouge on Thanksgiving weekend than to get to College Station.

Ole Miss and State are pushing 1-7

Not one person i have heard is pushing this. 3-6 is what everyone wants. There was talk of getting LSU, State and Vandy as our permanent. We will take that any day of the week.

this would not only be logically stupid but would pretty much kill the SEC as we've known it for nearly 100 years. It is baffling why anyone would think this is the best method instead of having 3 permanent opponents.

I think saying it would “kill the SEC as we’ve known it” is an overreaction, but 100% agree a 3-6 format is the way to go.

i have zero doubt that those games may take a couple year breaks while schools figure out how to make games work within their OOC scheduling

All this thread is making me do is lament for the game I fell in love with, which I truly felt was something passed down to me by birthright.

At least there are like-minded individuals on this website who I can reminisce with.

Honest question, in the days before message boards and twitter, did the rest of the conference really know about it (I'm talking fans, not administrators)? There was a lot more insulation back then.

It just sucks - and LSU playing big games during the day sucks too.

The reason, other than birthright, that so many of us fell in love with our team and this league is because it was unique, genuine, quirky, it's own thing.

All of that has been slowly chipped away and is close to being completely crumbled and just leaving us with a rump NFL.

And TBH, the night game thing was born out of practicality more so than just trying to create a tradition. They did it 1. to avoid the heat and humidity of daytime games early in the season and 2. to play in a different time slot than Tulane when they were still a good program. Add to that, AM 870 out of New Orleans has always broadcast our games and oddly it has generally been one of the most powerful AM stations in the country. So for a long, long time LSU was one of the only games on at night and that radio stationed reach a whole lot of ears around the country. I'm not even that old and I still remember being able to listen to LSU games at night as a kid before they were all on TV clear as day from Memphis, and I'll hear stories from time to time about guys telling me about listening to LSU games years back from a lot further away than that
