Someone tell me why we haven't offered Mike Leach $5m to be our coach

DISCLAIMER: Henry, everyone knows you want Luke gone and Freeze back. Please do not bleed all over this thread.

He has been remarkably consistent everywhere he has gone.

I just don't get why we haven't. I understand his recruiting leaves something to be desired, but the results speak for themselves.

At Texas Tech, he made ten straight bowl games. He's made four straight at Wazzou and will almost certainly make a fifth at the end of this season. Since Vaught retired, we've never made more than four consecutive bowls.

At Texas Tech, he had eight consecutive seasons of eight or more wins. We've only managed to eek out twelve 8+ win seasons since Vaught retired, and only once were they consecutive (2013 - 2015 - thanks Hugh). He's not slowing down either. He has won 8+ in four consecutive seasons on the Palouse and it appears he is well on his way to a fifth.

Someone tell me why we can't capitalize on the last 10 or so seasons of Leach's career? I just want some damn consistency out of our program for a change. If Leach could lead us to eight straight bowl games and win 8+ games (possibly even as much as 10 or 11) for six seasons in a row, I think we'd all be happy.

Unfortunately, we still don't have a chancellor or an AD.

Someone change my mind.

I don’t think we are in a position to even talk about hiring anyone until this awful administration can get an AD and chancellor... (I’d love to have Leach btw)

His salary increases to 4mm next year. Zero chance he'd go from Pullman, WA --> Oxford, Mississippi to deal with Ole Miss and all the bullshite that comes with it. Leach wouldn't even pick up the phone. My guess is that he's more than content winning 9-10 games a year in the wilderness of the PNW with his middle finger held high.

And I applaud him for it.

Yeah-he’d honestly be nuts to leave his current gig for the shite show that is Ole Miss football. Even for another million per year. Removing all local and Ole Miss bias, would you?

It's certainly worth making the call.

Washington has no state income tax. MS has 5%. So that's a chunk of it right there. Plus the endorsement deals he has in Washington would be significantly more lucrative than down here. Wasn't O pushing cars on the side while coaching Ole Miss? Compare that to Alabama where they financed a series of Mercedes dealerships for Saban. Those are worth over $100m to him now.

We just aren't playing in the same league as other schools located in states with functioning economies. Even states like Washington that don't really care about football can blow us out of the water.

He was the other finalist besides Freeze way back in 2011. RIP Rebelgator's fedex source.

When I hear criticism of him being coach, it's usually that he's just not the "Oxford type."

Before I lived here, I kinda thought that was silly. After having lived here awhile now, I can totally see that being the reason.

I'd love to have him here, and anyone that ruffles the feathers of the good-ole-boy/country club niche is A-OK with me.

Those people are the reason we are in the position we are now. So I couldn’t care less how they feel currently. They can get bent

What endorsement deals does he currently have? Or are you just speculating.

I didn’t think endorsement deals were his thing. He wrote a book and I know he was big with the USO. That’s about it

I don’t care whose feathers he ruffles if he wins consistently, I get the feeling the good ol’ boy types would care either as long as he won.

He wanted the Tenn job and would like to be in the SEC. Pay him 5m and promise him lots of money for coordinators. He would do for OM what Petrino did for Ark (he didn't fit in in Fayettville either) w/ hopefully a different ending.

I have no idea. I am just saying that the OP was all about money. "Offer him $5m". We can compete with money, but we can't offer something that is significantly better than what he already has.

The only way we have a chance is if the guy just wants to coach in the SEC. And even then there are other programs that seem more attractive than Ole Miss.

I would be fine with Leach.

I bet Tennessee wishes they had that one back.

From everything I’ve heard he’s been itching for an SEC gig for years. He’d take it in a heart beat if offered.

There’s no way we offer it to him though. That makes way too much sense for us to do it.

I'm more concerned about the future of our program due to the fact that we have focused our enrollment efforts on out of state kids to get that sweet out of state tuition, while ignoring Mississippi.

What happens when the aging, mostly in state, boomers die off and our fanbase is spread out all over the country unable/unwilling to come to a game like Cal this weekend? Yes, I realize the product isn't great right now but I predict a time will come when this will come back to bite us.

I mean if we're being honest, its the same reason nobody in the SEC has offered him. He's known to be a lazy recruiter, which on the west coast he can get away with because a good scheme can win you 8-10 games a year. In the SEC, ACC, or really even the big10 you can't win that way.

I would love to have him here and he's a great offensive mind but thats why i think he hasn't gotten a bigger gig
