So...the South Lost...what would they have been transporting over the last 158 years that they haven't been able to because of the outcome of the war?

shite. It's the #1 excuse people use when trying to say why their family didn't have slaves. "They were too poor to own slaves." That's a weak arse excuse. So the only reason they didn't have slaves was because they couldn't afford it? That's not much better than actually owning slaves.

How much do South Park school teachers make ?

Google Secession Statements of the individual Confederate States and you will see the reason for secession was the institution of slavery, and you will probably see that before the end of the first page. Now the individual constitutions of the individual confederate state were a little more vague. But you still understood the reason for secession.

the part that has always hung me up on it is that the first 4 states succession papers mention slavery explicitly.

ive never had a great defense against that argument

Historically speaking it is what it is. Yeah, we fought the Civil War because the South was worried it was going to lose the institution of slavery.

I can admit that because... it was 160 years ago. The nation of Germany didn't exist then. For that matter neither did Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and a ton of other countries. If a new generation is every 25 years that is 6 past and then some spare change.

160 years ago the South fought a war, that they lost badly, for morally abhorrent reasons. Okay. The South then and the South now are two completely different animals.

For fricks sake 160 years ago Japan was still trying to end its isolationist period and become a modern nation. It is a different world.

The way I see it, I am no more responsible or to blame for the Civil War than I am for the Irish potato famine. Or the Romans putting Boudica's Rebellion to the sword (though the bitch had it coming).

A big part of the Civil War was about slavery. I can live with that because it wasn't my war. I am in no way responsible for what caused it or how it played out. I think folks should accept that they are beating a very dead horse for reasons they need to stop and think over.

War is about money but they have to have a cause to get folks hyped to fight.

Check your history. Importation of slaves was banned in 1850. BEFORE the Civil War. Most are not taught detailed history, so your misperception is noted, but needs to be quashed so as to perpetuate misinformation.

It was slavery as the underlying cause, but not the only one.

Let's start with where it began: Fort Sumter, which was used by the U.S. as a tariff collection port. It's not a coincidence this was the location for the first battle of the Civil War.

Starting with Fort Sumter is a very misleading place to start because it ignores the causes of secession.

If that is truly your starting point then you have to say the civil war was caused by the north not abandoning their fort in the confederacy. But that gets you nowhere in answering the real question which is what caused the south to secede.
