The Supreme Court ruled Monday that some corporations can hold religious objections that allow them to opt out of the new health law requirement that they cover contraceptives for women.

The justices' 5-4 decision is the first time that the high court has ruled that profit-seeking businesses can hold religious views under federal law. And it means the Obama administration must search for a different way of providing free contraception to women who are covered under objecting companies' health insurance plans.

The way I read it, and I could be wrong, is that it doesn't necessarily give them a free pass on denying any kind of contraceptive. Just IUDs, Plan B, and another based upon when fertilization begins.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it unless it's been prescribed for a medical condition/reason. It'd be shitty to deny that coverage to a woman who needs it to control endometriosis or something along those lines. But at that point I'd probably have to go tell Hobby Lobby to go frick itself.

That's what I thought but a lawyer friend read the opinion and told me it applies to ALL contraception. I thought I definitely read that their objection was to the emergency contraceptives though, but I didn't feel like debating him.

The blurb I got reads that it's a pretty narrow ruling. Only covers the birth control mandate. 5-4 on ideological lines. Not surprising.

Interesting sidebar is that this is the first ruling that allows for profit companies to make claims under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Is this not killing their business? I would think 90% of the people that shop there are women.

That was Hobby Lobby's complaint but the justices likely expanded the ruling to cover the entire birth control mandate. That's how the blub reads, considering I'm not qualified to make sense of the opinion.

Did you ever think that a lot of women agreed with the lawsuit due their religious beliefs? Not all women are so stupid to believe everything the media or Dem(wits) tell them.

It'll run off the more progressive and well educated women but it'll draw in the hardcore jeebus people. It'll equal out for them.

This. Considering the company was going to shut down because of this, it's a big win for them regardless.

Just the rubes. I would think the NE/West coast locations will take a beating due to this. I am sure the SE locations will still do ok.

My fiance' is really into crafts and she shopps at JO-Ann mainly because of convienance but if there was a Hobby Lobby nearby and it was cheaper, she would shop there.

At the end of the day, most ppl still pick thier shopping choices based off finances and not religous or political beliefs.

Are you telling me that women can't afford birth control?

I can walk into any health department and grab a handful of condoms, from 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, for FREE.

In fact, I'm gonna do that today, and make balloon animals for my nephews.

My wife is into crafts and likes Michael's better.

I'm sure Hobby Lobby will start telling the folks that handle investments for their retirement plans to start divesting all ownership in the pharmaceuticals that produce contraceptives.

As Duke said, it may be that they extended it to cover the whole birth control mandate instead of specific drugs.

Like I said, it'll be unfortunate when one of those women need it for something other than birth control which it's often prescribed. But they wanted it that way by working for a company who wants their religion affiliation dictating their company policies.

No. I'm saying that birth control isn't just used to prevent pregnancy. Sometimes it's a medical necessity. One should be covered for a medical necessity.

Sometimes the Plan B pill is needed in cases of rape. One should be covered in cases such as that.

Good for you. Did you know that condoms have an 18% failure rate according to the CDC? Hormonal birth control is much more effective.

Honestly it depends on what it is and what you need it for. Without my insurance the pills I have to take to control my endometriosis post-surgery would run me about $150 a month. And that's the generic. I imagine IUDs and Depo are more expensive.
