Eric Clapton says Prince was. I'll defer to EC's judgement.

Duane Allman is mentioned one time in this entire thread and Prince is mentioned every other post.

It's a sign of the end times.

Shawn Lane
hard to argue the technical ability and had a diverse musical career. i don't think he had the formal training that vai had. obviously, if he had been able to have a longer career, who knows.

Steve Morse
he's got formal training like vai and a diverse background but i think we'd be stretching it to say he's on the same technical level as vai. i just don't think of morse as "savant" like vai.

quote:

Jimmy Herring
absolutely the creative and musical equal to vai but again, i don't see him doing savant kinds of things like vai/zappa. not that he is incapable, being a g.i.t. grad. i see him more like ian thornley who is way under the radar btw. or eric johnson

awesome, awesome names! really sad we couldn't see lane have a longer career. wow.

tecnique or not, it’s what pleases the senses
absolutely. i have two degrees in music performance so i can appreciate the raw genius of zappa/vai but, i don't find it very accessible. the compositions are so complex, they sometimes end up being weird for the sake of weird. i get alot more enjoyment out of listening to standard 80's guys like reb beach, vito bratta, evh, nuno, etc. heck even zack or mark tremonti.

Gilmour for me. He's not the fastest player, but his sense of space and tone is unmatched.

This entire thread is garbage if you don't include Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, or Joe Satriani in the conversation.

God,do you how many people have played an unbelievable guitar that you never heard of?

My freaking next door neighbor growing up was as good of a guitar player as anyone mentioned in this thread.

Rock
Eddie Van Halen
Stevie Ray Vaughan

Slide - "Lonesome" Dave Peverett

(Fusion - Al Dimeola) - perhaps not "rock" but close enough

How about John Mayer for a newcomer? I think that dude is damn good.

He comes off as a douche but a major redeeming quality imo is his love for SRV, who would get my vote ITT. Mayer even has a couple of the amps SRV used in his setup and employs SRV's old guitar tech.

Can't go wrong with Hendrix as an answer.

Here's a couple that I think are highly underrated that should be considered:

John Petrucci, Brian May

Funny that no one mentions Bonamasso. The label of "rock guitarist" would eliminate Atkins or my favorite Tommy Emmanuel. Carlos Santana deserves a mention and what about Blackmore?

Blackmore is probably the one guitarist I could identify with one note. Given the context of uniqueness at inception, I’d have to say, among the best. He brought baroque to the blues in rock. Hard to top that.

Steve Howe deserves mention as well. Hard to name another rock guitarist with a more unique approach. No pentatonic wanker here.

Guthrie Govan is a savant. Mention another guitar player to him and he’ll play to you in that players style and probably better too.

In the end, for me, it’s not the player, but the music they play. I can appreciate Vai’s mastery of the instrument. I just don’t want to listen to it.
