I probably didn't word my initial phrasing correctly. Of course there's a ton of UGA folks there, for people that couldn't get into UGA but still want to take advantage of HOPE they're obviously going to go go southern/GCSU/state/West GA/etc. What I was getting at was that southern, very much UNlike the other ones, seems to take personal offense to that in a way. It's almost like southern treats UGA as a kind of rival, and the true blue died in teh wool southern people there hate uga and hate the fact that so many students prefer to be UGA fans instead of adopting southern as their team.

I went to UGA but have many friends from HS who went to Southern. They all loved it and I have never heard anything bad about it. As far as academics go I can't help you but the social life/greek life seems to be solid.

My cousin played for and got a ring under Erk.

He's now teaching in Columbus and coaching football, basketball, and soccer.

Living the dream.

Southern definitely has a dichotomy of fandom. You have UGA fans attending Southern and then you have ride or die Southern fans. One of my best friends went to Southern and got verbally berated at a gas station in Statesboro while on his way out of town for a Georgia game because he had UGA car flags on. I imagine it’s a little like ULaLa to LSU

I went there for 2 years before transferring to UGA in undergrad. Very fun place but not near as fun as it was before the bouncer beat the kid to death and all the laws changed and cracked down.

That was wild, I was in my second year of Grad school. Some many students died around that time. Several nursing students died in a car crash, one student died of a heart attack, and a few suicides. It was a somber time on campus.

Yup I remember the nursing students dying driving to AM class at what was formerly Armstrong. The bouncer situation really changed Statesboro completely though. It went from a block of 4 or 5 no fricks given drugs openly used and sold 14 and 15 year olds let in bars if they had anything remotely resembling an ID to nothing. It’s like all of that stopped in an instant and now it’s just a regular place.

I think he meant they are FBS now rather than D1-AA(FCS) where they won all their national titles.

They have been a fun school to watch for someone that grew up watching mostly SEC. My in-laws all went and graduated from there. They usually have at least 1 SEC game on the schedule every year, and has given some teams fits since they run the option(beat UF, and gave Ole Miss a pretty good game a year or two ago). Playing LSU in the season opener this year. I know my in-laws are looking forward to that one as none of us have ever been to Tiger Stadium.

Go on back to Arkansas then. The fewer transplants, the better.

I graduated from Armstrong (GSU consumed them, now known as the Armstrong Campus). GSU was always known as a party school for good ol' boys and frat types. It's not that bad, can be fun but def wouldn't want to live in that area.

I've lived in both SE Georgia and Arkansas. Arkansas was much shittier.

A ton of my friends and kids I knew in high school currently go there and they seem to love it. Pretty shitty academically apart from their nursing program but don't ever mention that to anybody who went or currently goes there because they get very defensive about it for some reason. Statesboro is kinda a shithole but I think that's part of its "charm", unfortunately its not nearly as rowdy anymore because of the bouncer killing that kid. When my friends came and visited when we played them in 2017 they were really insistent that Southern is basically an SEC school and that Athens and Auburn weren't anything special. Ironically, almost all of my friends there are huge UGA fans and Southern fans on the side, although there are some die-hard Southern fans and more showed up to Auburn than I've ever seen for a non-SEC opponent. I think the median ACT testing score for accepted students there when I was a senior in HS was like a 16 so if you have a brain you can get in. It's very much UGA-lite, certainly more so than KSU, UNG, or UWG. Lots of school pride down in Statesboro, but also a ton of UGA football fans.

A couple friends and a cousin went there. They all had a good time. My cousin won a ring with the Evil Genius Paul Johnson. It's a small southern college town. The school is decent if you can't get into UGA and don't want to pay out of state to Ole Miss or Auburn. And they beat Florida in the Swamp so there's that.

I don’t like you. GSU isn’t Harvard but it also isn’t Southern New Hampshire.

I don't really think it's an insult to point out that GSU is not really a great academic school, and is often a fallback choice. Forbes just released their top colleges of 2019 and GSU ranked nearly 600th, which ranked 12th out of 14th of colleges in GA.
