Georgia folks, tell me about Georgia Southern University
I don’t recall hearing a lot about it but would appreciate your opinions.

It's in Statesboro, GA - not too far out from Savannah. Not 100% but believe two of their top degrees granted are teaching and nursing?

What do you want to know?

Do people that go there generally like it? Any notable pros or cons talked about?

for football or just in general?

Statesboro is a dump and a large portion of their students have almost as much of a chip on their shoulder/grudge towards UGA as tech people do.

For a different sport but just asking for “in general”

In general I think most of the people that go there with realistic expectations (in other words, don't expect the same college experience as a major school like uga or bama or something) have loved it. It's in a small south georgia town so you should pretty much know off the bat what you're getting into. Very country, not a lot of nightlife, not very big. Because of those factors I think it's easier to go "all-in" on enjoying it, opposed to going to a school with 40K undergrads where you're basically lost in teh shuffle.

I have zero idea at all how things may have changed over the last 10-15 years, but at the time I graduated HS southern was always considered an easy backup school due to the horrendously low entrance requirements. Unless you are a total dullard it isn't difficult to get in. But again, for all I know it could have changed a bit the last decade.

I’m friends with a few dudes who went there. They seemed to enjoy it. All were in fraternities except one. He was recruited out of college to work at Mutual of Omaha and makes a shite ton of money now. Like 300k+. For some reason that company recruits there a lot.

That’s all I got.

Party school for dumb-dumbs and good ole boys.

That was its reputation when I lived in Atlanta.

GSU took over my school so I guess it's my alma mater. I never went to Statesboro though.

From what I can gather online its solid second tier school. Like the University of Central Arkansas here.

Is it the greatest school ever? No.

But it is a solid enough school for most degrees and while the night life might not be spectacular that is not a bad thing.

Even for folks who can get into UGA its not a bad school because you will probably leave with less student debt. And that is with saying UGA is one of the best universities in the South.

I think most people have covered the answers here. Ultimately, if you ask more specific questions or have more specific thoughts, you'll likely get better quality responses.

WG's spot on... if you know what you're getting into, it's a fine spot. I have friends who played on several different sports teams there. I never spent a lot of time visiting though, but happy to relay specific questions/answers if there's anything outstanding.

FWIW I loved GSU. There is something for everyone to do and you are only a 20-30 minute drive from Savannah. The campus is beautiful, and their campus rec program is top five in the country (no BS, ranked by NIRSA). GSU used to be a teaching college and the school has an excellent teaching and nursing program.

The people that to Southern love southern, almost cult like. Eagles love the eagles more than tigers love the tigers. Everything is “Hail Southern” or “GATA” and they have a badass eagle named Freedom who flies over the stadium. They are D1 now and do well, but they really dominated before, several titles. They despise App state. Contrary to belief, most GSU fans actually like UGA. It was not uncommon to see dawg gear around campus. GSU is an Addias school which was iffy for me.

Statesboro is actually an ok town. It’s 100% a college town, and there were plenty of bars to go to, ranging from club type to country music type. Plenty of good food, and always some type of fair or event. Cost of living was extremely low, and I barely if ever remember any crime.

I love GSU and I’m glad I chose them over some of the others. GATA!

This is probably the best G5 feud (rivalry doesn't seem to do it justice) going. Especially since so many G5 schools have hopped from conference to conference. Nevada vs UNLV is about the only thing that compares now.

There are much worse places to go to school. Or live in for that matter. Like you said, Savannah is just up the road and that is a great town.

It reminds me of Conway, Arkansas. It is a short drive to a big city, its dirt cheap to live there, the economy is doing quite well thank you, and the schools are fine for what they do. I can live with those things.
