Sources: The NCAA is unlikely to grant an extra year of eligibility for student athletes who participated in winter sports and had their seasons cut short due to coronavirus. An extra year of eligibility is still in play for student athletes involved with spring sports.

Spring should be given that for sure. I empathize with all the seniors in winter sports, but most of them were done with their regular season,at least.

You would hope so. These are uncommon circumstances and those athletes shouldn't be punished.

Can't be mad about the winter athlete decision.
They played well over the majority of the season. I hate that many were denied shots at a championship but you can't alter the rules to give them a fifth year.

How does this affect scholarship limits, though?
Will there be a temporary expansion or are we going to tell a bunch of soon-to-be HS graduates to frick off?

Probably no scholarship limits for spring sports next year. The year after, they will have to be back to their usual limits.
Lets say softball has 5 seniors that would have been gone after this season. Those 5 seniors will be back next year, plus you sign 5 true freshman in the upcoming signing class. By 2022, your back to your usual numbers.

What about golf which is a fall and spring sport? Do they get one semester of eligibility to play in either the fall or the spring? Do they get the full year back? Do they have to sit the fall out and then come back to play next spring?

By giving the seniors another year wouldn’t everyone else have an additional year as well? Not everyone will use it obviously but it impacts the other classes on the team as well. Can’t give the seniors an extra year of eligibility without the freshmen, sophomores and juniors benefiting as well.

I would think non-seniors would just burn a redshirt

Gotcha. I wasn’t sure if some could based off the number of games they already played. They basically went a little over a 1/3 of the baseball/softball season. Seems like that would not meet requirements for a redshirt but I’m not sure tbh.

That's what has been discussed being done. Expand the roster size and allow for more scholarships for next season alone.

Damn, I was looking forward to Kotsar being here his 8th straight year.

I can just imagine how crazy the transfer portal will be with so many graduates having another year or eligibility.

Well to put this in perspective a high school senior has no option. Their career is just over.
