I was watching QB1 beyond the lights season 3 last night and noticed that the team from Nola played an undefeated team called John Curtis Christian. I looked into their history and they have had some ungodly amount of undefeated seasons and state championships. What's the story there?

Private school that recruits players for all sports. Probably not so much now as they used to because of the higher rule scrutiny (although I’m sure it still goes on).

They also play in a small division (D-2 I think) so their competition isn’t nearly as good as them. The public schools got tired of getting waxed by them and Evangel so now all of football in LA is split. There’s now a private school league and a public school league, so the competition is even less for JC.

They are a power house for sure. Coach Curtis is one of the greatest coaches of all time within the state. The population is massive in that area so kids wanna go there.

They played Warren Easton last year. So they play a few public schools as well?

They named a school after a coach if that tells you anything.

They have a lot of money and alumni, recruit damn near openly and play in (until recently) in small school divisions (like 1A 2A). They start putting players into their system as kids. I have heard that they will even hold kids back a year to have them bigger later.

They named the school after John Curtis, not his son the coach.

Reggie Dupard, Joe McKnight, Mike Stonebreaker, numerous other big time college players came outta Curtis.

Small school that starts recruiting players at the pop warner level. They get them in their system young and keep them rolling all through high school. A lot of their titles were when they played no one, now they’re in a more competitive division. Still very good.

There’s also been rumors they hold players back, steroids, etc. I have no idea whether there’s any credence to that.

OP,

As stated, they are a small private school that openly recruits kids for all sports. In many cases, the kids are “held back”. Before anyone claims bs, i personally know kids this was done to.

The other reason that their football team is so successful, is that the middle school uses the same play book as varsity. There are zero missed assignments when you have used the same exact playbook for 6-7 years.

They are best known for taking 30 kids to AL and blasting Hoover - which led to the cancellation of MTV 2-A-Days.

This is primarily bullshite. They were in a smaller division because they are a small school. They would go outta state and play other state's good teams and beat the hell outta everybody.

They were the team that went to Hoover and beat them when the stupid show was on MTV.

They upped their classification to play bigger teams but eventually were forced by rule to play within their actual classification.

Without question. I turned 18 in February my senior year and the vast majority of SR football players were older than me.

RIP

He put John Curtis on the map in my opinion when he went to Hoover and carried JC to a blowout.

I don’t remember a Rush Propst Hoover team getting beat as bad as they did that night.

Could it be that the school academic standards may have been a bit too much for some of them, rather than a deliberate plot to hold them back.

But, the 19 years old by 1 Sept ineligible rule applies to all LHSAA schools public and private, like a lot of other states. So, holding them back at a younger age should probably be done with caution in case they slip up again later on and lose eligibility by their senior year. Plus, if you were born in February, that includes 5+ months of birthdays within your academic year who could have been older than you without ever having been held back.

Keep this in mind... in Louisiana 20 percent of the students in the State go to private or religious schools, more than any other State in the US. And in S.Louisiana, the number is more like 40 percent. The private-religious schools generally have superior facilities, coaching, a more motivated student body, better admin support for athletics, and far better parental support than most public schools, north shore and N.LA excepted.

The John Curtis school was founded about late 1960s as a Christian outreach... and the athletic program was (and is) originally a tool in that program. They are a Div 2A size school but because of their incredible athletic program they have played up at d-4A and now d-5A, the highest classification for almost 20 years.

The LHSAA voted to force out the so called “select” private and public charter schools for playoff championships a few years ago...though in typical hypocritical mode, the so-called public districted schools continued to play against the select schools during the season because of revenue enhancement. This vote is widely regarded as a joke because most of the public schools recruit their axes off and pay little attention to so-called district lines.

Coach Curtis, sons, coaches will tell you that the athletic success of HC draws potentially troubled but athletically talent kids and that they don’t recruit for athletics... which is a stretch but they do have a point.,And despite what some may believe, their academic program is not light weight... decent with some very good scholars. But it is aimed at the athletic student who may be less of a force in the classroom.

The Hoover win did enhance their out of state reputation... but the school was nationally ranked long before that game. For such a successful program not that many a percent of JC kids have had a big college or pro career. They get the most out of what students they have...and Curtis shares, praises, invites, supports other teams even if much less capable. I remember going to watch summer drills where teams such as Country Day were invited...Coach Curtis and team were very willing to talk and share.

Unlike many large Louisiana high schools, the different sports teams at Curtis share players willingly. Trying to play two or three sports at most 5A LA schools is asking to be benched.

John Curtis is to Louisiana what De La Salle is to California. Extremely well coached and they play a style of football (veer offense) that is hard to stop at the hs level. They became a national power in the 80s and have literally had the same coaching staff for 30+ years. They competed one class below the state's top class for many years, but now compete in 5A.
