Kids from out of state want to go to a school that lives and breathes football and wins national titles. What’s so crazy here?

Sorry some people leave the state or region from which they’re from.

Bama gives out a lot of free money to attract out of state talent. They have 40 full time recruiters around the country. Alabama does not not have a large population and relies on OSS, Tennessee is similar.

Didn't read coming from you. I would ask if you even went to Alabama, but then again... I know that Alabama is equivalent to a flag ship community college, so I don't give a shite.

Do you have to work this hard at being a jerk or does it come naturally? I didn't post a single word that was ANTI any school whatsoever. Just some facts and reasoning related back to the original post. Sorry if that offends you so much somehow.

And, yes, I did attend the Univ of Alabama, BS - Applied Physics.

College rankings are pretty much crap anyway, there's too many variables. But if you took a close look, Alabama and LSU are pretty much statistically equivalent when compared by most ranking services (and the ratings can change dramatically every year). LSU tends to have a bit more higher paying graduates, but Alabama does a pretty good job as two of the largest majors are nursing and education. That serves our state well but that's never gonna bump up the financial ratings much.

The fact is... all the SEC schools are capable of turning out really sharp graduates in specialized fields. I have known idiots who attended Harvard, and geniuses who went to Ole Miss. College is what YOU make of it, rankings be damned. As a whole, SEC schools are maybe not the top tier in the nation - but they are pretty dang good, and most would consider them to be good value overall for the cost vs quality of education. Great entertainment on fall Saturdays are just a huge bonus.

I didn’t mean for this to get into discussions on academics and academic rankings but the football boost to enrollment is completely correct. A buddy in administration at ole miss told me that year they were on game day with the big singer, Katie Perry, enrollment applications doubled that year. It’s like a huge 2 hour promotion for your school

Did you read this from my friend allin2010?

The original poster is correct, but is that a bad thing? Alabama has grown their product, primarily through athletics. Instate kids are not being turned away, they just grew. The big thing is that Academics have not fallen back. From 2018 Enrollment.LINK . Nearly 15,000 in-state students were enrolled at Auburn that semester, more than 1,500 more than enrolled at the University of Alabama. Alabama was second with just over 13,000 students, followed by the University of Alabama at Birmingham with 11,000. Just 40 percent of Auburn’s 24,000 undergraduate students came from somewhere other than Alabama. UA got more than 1,000 students from six different states, including 1,100 from California and 1,600 from Illinois.

Huh?

Oh yeah... and Bama still has full time recruiting staff residing in that shithole known as California.

That's not even remotely accurate; according to College Board, which differs slightly from the statistics shared in this thread but remains in the same general ballpark, Tennessee is 82% in-state while Alabama is 39% in-state.

Most SEC schools are becoming progressively saturated with OOS kids/northerners, sure, but Alabama leads the non-Vandy pack followed distantly by South Carolina when it comes to Yankee transplants.

As long as they pay them well, it's better than residing in (insert any city in Alabama).

Ohio has just one other license plate for an out-of-state university: the University of Notre Dame. But if you think the proposal has no shot in the Buckeye State, think again.

Yes, even said it was a great response. My original post supported OP claims so what are you exactly getting at?

I still stick by post also Auburn is moving to the same type of model. Allin2010 broke down the raw numbers even said Auburn only has 1600 more Alabama residents. It's only so many College ready seniors in the state.

Alabama Nursing/Education/Law

Auburn Veterinarian/Civil Engineering/ Agricultural

UAB Medical/applied Studies

So a University shouldn't go out and try to recruit the best possible talent even if in a state you find unappealing? I lived in California trust me it ain't a shite hole outside the big metros it's very conservative.

You are so right. Most of these posts on here can't get past their own football team. This is about big business and unlike the typical football fanatic, the Universities care mostly about the business side of making money.

The University of Alabama is on the cutting edge of recruiting students in its model. They have also unapologetically used Football NC success to reach out to out-of-state students, as was plainly pointed out by our administration years ago on a 60 minutes piece done on Coach Saban's impact at the University.

Will others follow such a business model? Sure, like they always do when someone has a better mousetrap.

judging by the home states of athletes and the number of out of state students, The University of Alabama is nation wide. It's working out great.

Interesting that Ohio only has one out-of-state university tag. I would doubt that gets through their legislature. Ohioans, as a group, hate anything to do with the SEC, they lump us all together. The Columbus media promotes that hate, imo. BTW, I have spent a lot of time in central Ohio.

The USNEWS link provided had the following ranks.

206: MSU
160: Ole Miss
160: Arkie
153: LSU
143: Bama
133: UK
124: Mizzou
112: UT
97: AU
66: TAMU
47: UGA (Hope Scholarships paying off)
30: UF
14: Vandy

These rankings are not completely accurate and different models may give slightly different results based on different criteria. However, they are a data point and good general guide.

Not surprisingly the Mississippi and Arkansas make up the bottom rung.

Bama has been a draw from non-southerners for a while now. I know at one time (30s and 40s maybe) they actively recruited the northeast.

The pitch at that time was going after northeastern WASPs who did not want their children going to school with Jewish kids (which were entering the northeastern colleges in high numbers).

What a load of garbage, Bama was a haven for Jewish students from the 1920s forward.

The truth is that AU has been one of the most racist schools in the SEC for a while (maybe it has changed in the last 5 or 10 years). Their recruiting pitch to high-end neighborhood students in the Birmingham area was, "don't you want to come to AU where you will have mostly students who look like you?". Sickening.

AU is only racist because the minority students from AL can not get in AU or their scores are such they have a lot of other opportunities at other prestigious Universities. The rest run to Bama or the other smaller schools in the state.

It will be interesting to see the dynamics of the in state student population will be at both AU and UA when AL gets the lottery,

Another load of garbage, as Alabama and AU have the same admission standards and a similar ACT average. The truth is AU has long used their lily-white student population to continue attracting the same. (Again, I don't know if they are still doing this, but they were 5 or 10 years ago.)

FOS, AU is at least one point higher and one of the reasons why Bama takes so many out of state students is they offer a lot of scholarship money to higher ACT scores. Only way to keep the numbers up. I know a recent graduate who was set to go to Ole Miss on a partial scholarship, that got a full ride to Bama. Her Father (AU Grad) told me that she was actually making money by going to Bama. The Bama numbers also do not include the "Special Entrance" numbers for those kids that wouldn't get in normally. Ask any HS Counselor in AL.
