Is it just because a team has a lower ranking? Is Bama not considered a Cinderella team Because of its high ranking?

The 5th overall seed is never going to be considered Cinderella.

Bama is a p5 conference champion, so no Cinderalla. Arky is a 3 seed, but if they make the final 4, one could argue they are. To me, a Cinderalla team is a team that had ups and downs throughout the year, but improved as the year went along, and is peaking at tournament time. A team that is better than their record suggest, and has exceeded expectations in the tournament. Oral Roberts is the best example of a Cinderalla team in my opinion.

Bama wins its conference.

Bama wins its conference tournament.

Bama fans still want to be a Cinderella.

Bama is from a big conference. Led 3pt shooting. Has had some recent NBA talent.

Cinderellas come from small conference that don't have star power. They may have talent but your average viewer might not know where the school or heard of any of the players

Has to have been overlooked the entire season while having no outside expectation of doing well before the tournament starts. And then they have to make it to at least the sweet 16, but more so the Elite 8 or Final 4.

Also needs to be a small school that nobody's really heard of. So Syracuse this year, Loyola this year or Butler in 2011 wouldn't count as Cinderella's given their already successful history

Teams that fit the description of Cinderella would be the 1983 NC State and 1985 Villanova teams. Barely make the tourney and somehow win the whole thing.

Gotta at least be a 7 seed or higher. Preferably from a mid-major conference. If it's a P-6 team it needs to be some non-traditional program like Oregon State who kinda came out of nowhere to win their conference tournament for the auto bid and just keeps on rolling in the big dance.

Bama is historically a top 3 SEC basketball program so no.

Usually it’s someone with a seed of 10 or higher and not a school with many NCAA tourney appearances

Im pretty sure Nate Oats never wants the Cinderella label. He wants to be expected to make the tourney, deep runs and Final Fours on a regular basis.

As per the fable, a Cinderella team is one who shows up to the ball without an invitation and makes a splash. One-bid conferences don't get invitations, they get an auto bid for winning the conference tournament. No one other than themselves wants them to be there. If such a team pulls of an upset or two in the NCAA tourney, they get the Cinderella label.

Oral Roberts is definitely a Cinderella. Loyola is in my mind since they knocked off a #1 seed early. ACU was briefly.

Alabama would have gotten an invitation even if they had lost in the conference tournament.

Syracuse was a “Last 4 in” and 8th place in a crappy ACC so they’re definitely a Cinderella.

Probably mostly based on the odds of winning.

If you went into the tournament with, say, 1 in 25, that's not really a "Cinderella" team

Go into it with 1 in 10,000 odds and definitely

The cut off? No idea.
