Wild that my parents saw the Grateful Dead there when I was just a baby and it’s still in use today.

I'm one of the few that don't want to see Coleman torn down. I guess part is sentimental from days past, graduation, etc. The other is that I think the Bryant-Denny renovation was a waste. In person attendance is on the way out it appears. Why do it again? Of course this time, it won't be my money.

The lighting in Coleman reminds me of the old Saturday morning wrestling.

Coleman makes for an ugly watch on television. Go watch a Kentucky or Auburn home game and you'll see the difference. You don't need a massive arena, just something that looks and feels new. The arena you play in is the crown jewel of your basketball program, you can't let it hold you back.

quote:You make a good point, but I remember when Alabama was fielding excellent teams (Newton & Sanderson era), we'd often pack that 15,000 seat arena out! We need a new arena, but not a tiny one like Auburn's place. Hell, they've averaged about 7000 thousand fans a game there, and with the type of team we've got this year, I suspect we'd average 5000-7000 more per game.

Alabama's capable of drawing big-time numbers when Oats & Co. get cranked up!

15K at Coleman felt like 5K at any other large arena. Same with Thompson. AU wanted a Cameron type atmosphere when they built the AA , and they succeeded very well. They wanted the crowd on top of the court and a very intimidating atmosphere. They could have built a 12K arena and not get those results. Coleman will never get that feel.

Maybe the should attach an Indian casino to it

I'll agree that Alabama needs a new arena with a better configuration, but we ain't gonna be building any crackerbox in Tuscaloosa. Go look at Tenn. and Kentucky field houses for examples. They won't have to be as big as them, but I guarantee you it'll be at least 12,000+......with an area for "standing room only"!
PS- Alabama averaged over 13,000 in '18-'19 with Avery fricking Johnson coaching them!

AU built smaller because that is the trend in College Athletics. Small creates demand and AU used it to their advantage. The also created demand by students by giving them court side seats and limiting the total numbers.
Coleman is so 70s as far as fan views. Far from the action and dimly lit. Only way to change that is to start over.

Other than that bullshite reason for Auburn's "mini-barn", what did you just post that I didn't agree with?

Why was that a BS reason for why AA was built. If AU wanted to save money they would have stayed with BEC and continue with the curtains. They built AA to promote the BB program and crate atmosphere. Remember AU packed out BEC in 1999 en route to a #1 seed. But it still didn’t have any atmosphere same with Coleman. I reminds my of the old Omni in Atlanta. TV has change everything, some are just slow to admit it.

"Attendance at Auburn Arena dropped 6.9 percent from last year to an average of 5,823 fans, the second-lowest average in the 14-team in the SEC. The attendance for Auburn's 18 home games is the lowest in Auburn Arena's four-year history and marks the worst average since the 2007-08 season inside Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum."

I'm guessing an issue about rebuilding or renovating at this moment is akso the BJCC Arena is in the midst of a year long renovation. That would probably have been Alabama's home during a Coleman rebuild.

Do you remember who was coaching AU at that time ? Man talk about selective posting of FACTs, you just defined it for the rest of the board. AU made a run under Cliff Ellis in 1999-2003. Under Lebo and Barbee, AU was a train wreck and attendance reflected that. AU built the new Arena because they couldn't attract recruits to Auburn and they couldn't get the students to attend game either. Auburn looked at Cameron and used it as a model. Ever wonder why they do not build a bigger arena ? You think they could increase attendance if they did. With TV today, programs know atmosphere is more important to a program than attendance numbers. Bama is just late to the game.

Firstly, you've got to go back to the Joel Eaves era to see any consistently decent attendance. Next, you're saying that regardless of whether Auburn could draw more people, they were gonna build small (that's my 2nd bullshite), and finally, since when did Auburn worry about what tv thought? Tv games are generally chosen by their importance to standings and public interest. (that's my final bullshite, by the way )
All that bullshite, along with throwing Duke's arena/program into the conversation, hunting for validity is bush league bullshite.

Joel Eaves, you are showing signs of dementia more every day. AU never had a history of supporting BB and the University never gave a shite about it. But under Cliff Ellis and the Cliff Dwellers the students and the fans supported decent teams. When AU announced the building of the AA, they emphasis was atmosphere and to get away from the empty echoes of SEC arenas. It was something the SEC Office wanted because of the Tv contracts. Ole Miss follows suit. Just like the drunk Uncle I call Bama, size is not everything and most programs have figured it out. Bama just prefers that lipstick.

Renovation doesn't do this project justice. The work planned for Coleman Coliseum is a complete gutting of the 50-year old home for Alabama basketball and gymnastics.
-- How will the capacity change? Athletics director said they think it will end up in the 9,500 to 10,000 range for a net loss in the 4,000 range.
-- Cost: $115 million, but Byrne said that number is fluid/very subject to change and requires the votes of trustees to move forward. Building a new arena would have cost an additional $70 million that Byrne said was unnecessary.
-- The first row is currently 17 feet from the floor. When it's complete, it will be seven feet.
-- There will be a more open-air feel with the seating bowl opening up to the concourse.
-- A second tier of seating along with an upper concourse will be added to bring those upper seats closer to the floor.
-- Premium, bunker style club seats will be added to one of the end lines.
-- Additional club seats will be added near midcourt just above the student seats on one side.
-- There will be new lighting, ribbon boards and video board added with this project.
-- The gymnastics training facility in the back of the arena complex will also be renovated.
-- The women's basketball offices and locker room will be moved back to Coleman from Foster Auditorium.
