Obvious issues that need to be addressed offensively

I'm as pumped as anyone about the win, but l, let's be honest, if our defense didn't play their asses off, that game's not close. The offense is dying too many times and for too many unneeded reasons.
I know Sam wants his coaches to coach, but these are glaring issues that need to be addressed with Briles.
1. Stop running reverses and lateral run plays. I've given you two weeks and it's clear we can't do that in this league. It's a drive killer. Get the RB north and south and blast into the defensive gaps. If we have to install a little bit of power running game, then we will.
2. Install a goal line/short yardage package under center. I'm not letting you run 4th and short out of the damn shotgun anymore when we have a 6'5" 230 lb qb that can move. It's idiocy in this league to make him run 5 yds before he even gets to the line of Scrimmage.
3. No more KJ Jefferson time on the 4 yd line. If you want to do it on the 1, maybe, but everyone in the building knows he's getting the ball and running it. Jefferson is also a turnover machine and clearly not ready for the spotlight yet. That's too deep for him to score a td when the defense knows what's coming. If you want trickery on the goal line, install the jump pass. I also don't want my veteran QB out of the game when it's obvious we're having trouble scoring on the goal line.
5. When we have a lead in the 4th quarter in a one possession game, no more speed mode. Our defense is going to be gassed by then and the clock is our adversary at that point. Don't get conservative in play calling, but we don't need to go 3 and out in 45 seconds when theres 7 min left in the game and we're up.
Any other suggestions?

quote:I agree but it's not necessarily a KJ problem but a scheme issue in the fact that you can't bring in your "run the ball QB" and not expect the defense to sell out to stop the run. If we are on the goal line and we plan on telegraphing the run then just run wildhog with Burks (if healthy) or with the 240 lbs. big back. Heck, bring in Marshall to play fullback and run it up the gut --- you'd have a better chance in that situation. I agree that I'd rather keep the starting QB in the game unless he has gone full blown starkel. It disrupts the rhythym by bringing in a different QB. Briles will get us there - 2nd game in the SEC and with in charge of a horribly coached team over the past 3+ seasons.
No more KJ Jefferson time on the 4 yd line.

I think he improved quite a bit over week one, at least we didn't see any trick plays this week. I hope he can adapt his scheme a little more power oreineted instead of quite so much east-west finesse stuff. He's one of the better OCs in the country. I have faith Pittman knows this as well.
What scares me is a team like Bama (I know they should scare basically everyone), and even Ole Miss, who can light you up all day and aren't as predictable as Leach. There's going to be games where we're going to get into a shootout to win.

I think we're setting up KJ to throw a pass when we need it the most in these situations. Imagine a 27-21 type game against Auburn when were driving to take the lead late, and it's 4th and goal from inside the 5.
Everyone in the stadium and watching on TV knows what's about to happen when we trot KJ into the game, hell, my fiancee even knows and she couldn't name our HC earlier today. Then KJ drops back and throws the easy wide open TD pass to give us the lead.
THIS is the payoff from showing this same look previously. I can see it clear as day, bookmark if you need to. KJ will come in and throw the easy pass when we need it the most, it may not be for a TD but it's coming.

Agree with all of the above, especially this one:
Not to go all football purist, but one aspect of spread offenses I simply can't stomach is lining up in the shotgun on short yardage conversions (or the inability to line up under center).
I know it's difficult to practice in terms of the center-QB exchange, but there are other spread based teams that have situational packages.
I'm not bailing on Briles just yet, but he'd better trash the cutesy shite. His playcalling has been piss poor the last two games, our offense has gassed our defense, and we have no rhythm.
Two big issues I see is that our offensive line can't run block, and our receivers can't get separation. The latter is a big part of why we can't move the ball down the field or score in the red zone. All of our offensive TDs this season have come on busted coverages.

I was a bit disappointed week 1 with Briles. I am also willing to be okay with last night considering we lost our All SEC RB and best WR in the first quarter of the game.
Like the team, hopefully the play calling gets better week to week.

Is it this or is it Hamonds? He seems to have the high school mentality of going backwards and reversing field. He needs to just take the 2 yard loss.
If you take this threat out of the offense then the defense doesn’t have to defend the entire field and the other plays won’t work as well.

I lost my mind in the game thread over the Hammonds play, and someone put it best - he has deceptive speed in that you think he has the speed to get to the edge on that play, but he can't.

It was looking like we needed it when he came in yesterday, but fortunately we survived that episode.
Overall, I was pleased, mainly with the effort. Especially on defense.
Offensively, we have GOT to establish a competent run game. I think the line is better, but still not getting the push we need when we have to have the tough 2 or three yards.
Maybe Briles will also figure out that some of his stuff just isn't going to work.

Our offense will absolutely lose a few games singlehandedly this season if they don’t stop the ill-timed tempo 3 & outs in critical situations that leave our defense hanging out to dry.

Stop doing the double reverses. The offense isn't good enough to execute those plays right now.

I don’t think we necessarily have to go under center but we definitely need to be better short yardage and make it a priority in practice. Other spread teams have success in short yardage but they get downhill quickly. Same with running out of the gun. Hell look at any dan Mullen led team. Briles has downhill run schemes in his offense we just need to go to it more. I could tell that was the plan with Boyd but when he went down we went away from it. I’m guessing it’s because smith is a smaller back who probably isn’t great in between the tackles. My problem is that when Boyd went down we didn’t have any other big back ready to step up and run the ball up the middle

I about lost my mind on that 4th and inches play. Not only in the shotgun, but wasting time on handing the ball off.

This is the 3rd coach that hasn't been able to figure out how to make him productive. Just a weird situation all around.

100% agree. Not only this, but when you come under center the play action becomes a huge weapon in short yardage situations, especially with the tight ends. We saw this with Petrino who was a master at it

It's gotta be some weird check or read we're getting wrong. it never makes any sense when these happen in the game plan.

eh, I saw our whole line get their shite pushed in on 4th and short, from the shotgun actually gave them the room to jump the pile potentially if done correctly.

I think they're trying to bring KJ along, but realistically you lose the suprise of switching him to QB because you have to sub him in.
part of his package should feature a substitute of him in for a skill position player earlier in the setup, then a quick rotate and snap or something if they're going to do this at all.
Also would help if he ever attempted a pass play on the field.

our offense does not have the timing down yet. we gotta get that down so we can start moving the ball more efficiently

Franks has a nice arm.
Was night and day compared to those ducks Moo State's QB was throwing.
I was effin shocked that dude threw for 600 on LSU with that noodle.
