Optimism is building within pro sports that play will resume this summer. Dr. Anthony Fauci has not reached that point.

Fauci, one of the leaders of the White House's coronavirus task force, remains guarded about sports returning in 2020. He reiterated his view Tuesday in a Q&A with The New York Times, telling reporters James Wagner and Ken Belson that seasons might have to be scrapped if the safety of athletes and staff can't be assured.

"If you can't guarantee safety, then unfortunately you’re going to have to bite the bullet and say, 'We may have to go without this sport for this season,'" Fauci is quoted as saying.

The NBA, the NHL and MLB suspended their seasons in mid-March, and there are no clear signs as to when games can resume. MLB reportedly is optimistic it can begin an abbreviated season in late June, and there are reports the NBA and NHL have begun taking small steps toward getting players back into training.

Fauci told the Times that he has spoken with "some sports executives" about how play can resume. He declined to provide specifics. He has said that MLB could set up in a small number of cities and keep players in strict isolation.

"I know it’s going to be difficult for them not to be out in society, but that may be the price you pay if you want to play ball," Fauci told the Times.
The shortage of coronavirus tests, the lack of a vaccine and the likelihood that cases will increase in the fall are key factors in Fauci's cautious approach.

"You can try and influence the virus by your mitigation programs, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to get the virus under some sort of control before you start resuming normal activity," he told the Times.

Without getting political...

Baseball would certainly have it easiest. They can practice and keep social distancing during practice. Base runners are the only time you HAVE to get close to another player. All the other major sports have them up close for much longer time frames.

Fauci is a fearmonger who would keep the country on shutdown 24/7 for the rest of the year. Don't take his advice seriously on any issue

This is so fricking retarded

First it was flatten the curve. Now it’s guarantee safety which I assume means what?

Now that the horse is out of the barn and you’ve let health people make these decisions they will never. I repeat NEVER say it’s ok to do anything. Because I will let you in on a secret. Until the end of time at least one person will catch this and at least one person will die of this every year just like the flu

Guess what. I’ve decided to tear up all streets and destroy all existing cars and automobile factories. Boom. Car accident deaths eradicated. I am health secretary of the millennium!! I will never let anyone back into a car until I guarantee their safety

You have a 98% chance of living if you catch this. Considerably higher if you aren’t like 70 years old. This whole waiting for bill gates to come up with a vaccine while we go into a depression is one of the dumbest things of all time.

Yet you don't mind getting such an illness that has impacted the whole world just by standing close to somebody with it?

That's not how it actually spreads. You can't just catch it because the person next to you has it. There still has to be a transfer.

This is going completely off topic to the sports topic but at least he isn't in the group of people that have been busy shooting down everything and anything positive that comes out about this virus.

Promote the possibility that the Gilead drug remdesivir is a positive in treating the coronavirus, and if you're a well know person, you will get tarred and feathered in the twitter world by the doomers that likely would rather stay shut down if it's going to hurt Trump.

I mean, good fricking god, unlike most of this board (which is far right), I hate Trump, but I'd rather see my sports, get to travel, etc, this year than sit around and not do much. And if it's a positive for Trump if things do go positively and he gets reelected easily, oh fricking well. I'll get over it.
