That stadium looks horrible
It is. The area around it has gone downhill severely, and without Alabama playing their games there it just hasn't pulled people in. UAB doesn't have the money to upgrade/upkeep Legion Field - it's way too big for them.

Although this article is over a year old, the point is still valid:

This year, the city of Birmingham is paying ESPN $550,000 to help fund the ESPN-owned Birmingham Bowl, which is title-sponsored by jewelry retailer Jared. The game previously had been called the PapaJohns.com Bowl and the BBVA Compass Bowl but did not have a corporate title sponsor in recent years.

The bowl game moves to the new stadium for the upcoming season, and UAB moves there for 2021.
The Birmingham Parks Board is desperately trying to find events to host there, but I don't see it happening unless they can buy up dozens of blighted blocks around it and raze them.

Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium is light years better than Legion Field. GTFOH. Also, it has received a ton of upgrades since you were there in 2009.

Remember when OleMiss and Hugh Freeze pointed to this game as a reason their 6-6 team signed a Top 5 class a month later ?

And the economic impact to the city was much more than the payout. Plus, they have a sponsor again.

Seemed about the same as it's been since the 80's the last time I was around there earlier this year. I only went to my appointment at Bham Southern and left though. Didn't really explore around there very much.

As severe weather is still in the area, we remain in an extended delay. Please stay tuned to Twitter for updates as they become available.

Granted I'm several miles away, but I haven't heard any thunder in quite some time.

I assume someone running the game uses a lightning detector, so even if they don't hear thunder they still know if there is lightning within whatever the required distance is.
The axis of heavier rain has shifted north of Birmingham, so maybe it won't take too much longer before they're in the clear.

I haven't been in that stadium since 96 and it wasn't a good area back then, either.

The Birmingham Bowl has resumed.
May God have mercy on their souls.

It was a great area when the stadium was built. Originally the area wasn't that bad, until they built the freeway and the state started screwing with property lines and everything else.
The home values tanked and the people who moved in were not interested in upkeep. Values plummeted more, and bad elements moved in. Crime skyrocketed.
By the 80s it was rough. The 90s it was a garbage heap. Alabama moving its games out was the final straw for the area, but it was barely on life support even then.

I'm downtown and haven't heard any in at least an hour and a half.
I'd be more worried about getting shot over there than I would be getting struck by lightening.
It was either Monday or Tuesday that had a shoot out over there with over 100 rounds of brass in the street

I was in Birmingham a couple of years ago and went to a UAB game at the stadium. I didn’t find the stadium any worse than those that most colleges use. The neighborhood is low income, but it’s not like there were armed gangs running all over the place. No different than what you see if you go less than a mile from the campuses of LSU, Alabama, etc.

I was there until the delay at 7:55 in the first.I was soaked.

Pretty much. It's an old stadium with some old stadium issues - small concourses and bathrooms mostly. It's actually nicer today than it was in the 90's when Bama still played games there, or it was last time I was there a few years ago.
As for the area, it's obviously not a great area of town. But it's not the war zone some want to portray it to be.

Like I said, we normally go. BHAM may be a shithole, but its MY shithole.
I think the game will stay here. It should be much better when the new stadium gets built. Looking forward to that.
