1998-2018:

21.7- Texas vs. USC, 2005
18.6- Ohio St. vs. Oregon, 2014
17.8- Oklahoma vs. Florida St., 2000
17.5- Florida St. vs. Virginia Tech, 1999
17.4- Florida vs. Ohio St., 2006
17.2- Alabama vs. Texas, 2009
17.2- Ohio St. vs. Miami, 2002
17.2- Tennessee vs. Florida St. 1998
15.8- Florida vs. Oklahoma, 2008
15.6- Alabama vs. Georgia, 2017
15.3- Auburn vs. Oregon, 2010
15.1- Alabama vs. Notre Dame, 2012
15.0- Alabama vs. Clemson, 2015
14.8- Florida St. vs. Auburn, 2013
14.8- LSU vs. Oklahoma, 2003
14.6- Clemson vs. Alabama, 2018
14.4- LSU vs. Ohio St., 2007
14.2- Clemson vs. Alabama, 2016
14.0- Alabama vs. LSU, 2011
13.8- Miami vs. Nebraska, 2001
13.7- USC vs. Oklahoma, 2004

It's interesting that the Top 4 highest rated National Title Games all involved teams NOT from the SEC.

While its fun to see the SEC involved every year, I think it shows its good for the sport when other teams from outside the South have a shot.

These numbers are misleading, before 2010 all title games were played on networks... now they’re all on cable.

Edit... Got beat to the point about cable vs broadcast above

The 2014 game just shows you how many Ohio State fans are out there

Only one of the top 8 happened in the past decade.

Viewership is declining.

I think a lot of it also comes down to the fact that our states are going to watch the game regardless if one of our teams are playing.

Earlier Tuesday, ESPN reported the game scored an overnight rating of 16.7, up 9% from last year's title game. Only the Oregon-Ohio State CFP championship game in January 2015 had a bigger rating (18.8) and more viewers (33.9 million), which was also on ESPN.

Last year's NC game article.

I'm not shocked that the Miami-Nebraska 2001 game is just about the lowest. Everyone knew Nebraska was going to get absolutely thrashed.

What night were the games on? Some of us have to be at work at 3:00am during the week.

Also interesting that 8 of the top 9 are all from the BCS era when the title games were played on Sunday and not Monday

Anything past 2014 is no longer accurate. Streaming is still not counted in the overnight and final ratings.

I believe CA was #1 population state at the time and Texas was #2

Florida is #3

Anytime any of these 3 are involved you should expect good ratings

PA, IL, and OH are all in the Top 10 which helps Ohio State (PSU and UI not having teams in games)
