Rumors of a growing rift between Pruitt and Donut Phil

"There also are whispers out of Knoxville that the hard-charging Pruitt and new athletic director Phillip Fulmer are not exactly seeing eye to eye as both feel their way in their new roles. And maybe those growing pains are to be expected considering the newness in some ways and the old habits — Fulmer being the coach; Pruitt working for guys way more famous than the AD — in others."

And the monolith begins to crack.
Well, in Tennessee's case the pebble.

You pretty much quoted the only negative sentence in the whole article
quote:
But here's a quick checklist on positives for Pruitt so far:
He handled Murray's criticism about his ability to be a CEO of a program like a CEO of a program.
He answers questions with a directness that (a) would make Butch pass out and (b) lets everyone know that he has a confidence in his knowledge of football that he's fine with mixing up a couple of syllables and some subject-verb agreement. (Know who else does that? Saban, aight.)
He refuses to reference a player by name. And while that may make it tough for beat writers and the rest of this industry, the truth is, name the last UT player who deserved to be singularly praised? We'll wait.
So Wednesday, in the bowels of the College Football Hall of Fame, no one is saying Pruitt took a step toward enshrinement. But here's at least one vote for believing this is the best football coach UT has had since his boss was sitting in his seat.

Wasn't phil just a stop gap or is he really in charge?

Hiring an assistant coach is always a crap shoot. No-one knows how well they will perform.
Recent East Hires:
Florida---Dan Mullen (Proven winner)
UGA---Kirby Smart (Long time assistant, good fit, good hire)
USC---Will Muschamp (Previous Head Coaching Experience)
UTK---Pruitt... After a cluster of a coaching search, had issues at UGA, limited time at anyone location. Verdict, unknown, but would not be considered a strong hire.

I guess the bar is set pretty low when looking for positives for the face of your program.

Does anyone think it's possible that phil could try to manipulate his way back into the head coach position (again)? I mean, Pruitt is probably the perfect rube for his master plan.

Jeremy has a good football mind but he's in a bad situation. Fulmer was the type guy that would DO ANYTHING to win and not in a good way. He orchestrated a palace coup against John Majors, his mentor, to get him out. He cut a deal with the NCAA on the Albert Means case when they had bid on him as well, to save his arse and hang Alabama (along with some assistance from SEC Commish Roy Kramer).
The biggest issue is gonna be with Fulmer putting himself in a Jerry Jones situation. He's very involved in the inner workings of the program and that can never happen. I once asked a Georgia fan what was the problem when Ray Goff was coaching. He said Ray isn't the problem, It's Dooley. The Head Coach has to have autonomy with the program. he has to have the final say. He has to set the tone and he has to lay out the direction of the program without interference from anybody. You can't have Fulmer calling recruits that Jeremy may not want or have him barging into jeremy's office giving him a list of plays he'd like to see or what he thinks the gameplan should be. Fulmer is a strong personality but the problem is Jeremy does too.
Jeremy made a mistake. This will be a short time deal. Jeremy will tell fulmer to get fricked and that won't go over well with the "Knoxville Mafia" as we called them during Phil's days.

Shocking
You hired a guy who should probably be running a chain of vape stores to run your major football program
not sure what you expected

The past few years haven't exactly been sunshine and rainbows, and Pruitt hasn't coached a game yet. Gotta find encouragement somewhere
The sentence OP posted is the only one that slants negative

I'm going to enjoy watching this unfold

Pruitt ain’t gonna do it. UT fans will start booing him after WV pounds them and he’ll lose his shite. I predict fisticuffs vs Phat Phil. Who will win?

Pruitt and Phil not getting along was about the most predictable thing ever. Pruitt's personality would not accept Phil trying to micro-manage things at all, but you know Phil is going to get his hands in everything.

And what you just quoted has nothing to do with Pruitt and Phil's relationship. This thread was about that, not about what Pruitt did or didnt do/say at media days.

couldn't have seen this coming. pruitt has such a great history of getting along with people and making good off the field decisions.
