University of Alabama freshman linebacker VanDarius Cowan has been dismissed from the football team for a violation of team rules, according to an announcement Monday from the UA athletics department.

"VanDarius has been dismissed from the team and is no longer a part of our football program due to a violation of team rules," Coach Nick Saban said in the statement Monday morning. "Each of us has a responsibility to represent The University of Alabama in a first-class way, and failure to meet those standards can't be tolerated. We wish VanDarius the very best in the future."

Screwed up in high school, screwed up in academics, screwed up punching a guy at a bar

I'm a big proponent of giving guys 2nd chances because the alternative is generally the end of their one shot to pull their family out of poverty, but 3 strikes? Sorry man, bye.

Alright Gumps, what’d he do?

And Auburn, how do you feel about the prospects of a 2019 LB corps that features Cowan and Pappoe?

Cowan was given multiple chances to change his course in life. I hope he figures it out soon.

Does he get to keep the Challenger throughout the remainder of the lease?

I agree. That;s why I usually do not criticize Auburn for taking on players other programs have kicked off the team.

However, this is what I don't understand about many on the Rant. They like to criticize Alabama and say Saban covers up indiscretions for top players. But Cowan was a high 4* player .966 rating, and Saban kicked him off the team. Say what you will, but it couldn't have been easy to kick off a player with that kind of talent.

My acknowledging that Pappoe will be playing for Auburn in 2019 is butthurt?

You sure I’m the sensitive one here?

It hurts, no doubt! Y'all got a good one, for sure. Wish we could have reeled him in, but it is what it is.

If they're decent people that make a couple of mistakes, Saban tries to keep them and get their mind right. If they're hopeless frickups, they gone.

Rules are rules. When a kid rejects the offer of a new car, that’s a blatant sign of disrespect, in Tuscaloosa.

You can criticize him and say it's wrong or he makes bad judgements, but Saban generally decides whether a kid has a "good heart" or not in these types of decisions. Geno Smith fricked up multiple times, including 2 DUIs. I like Geno and think he's a good kid, but IMHO if you do that twice you forfeit your right to stick around. Saban liked Geno, thought he just fricked up, and decided to keep him around.

Other kids fricked up twice and got shown the door, like Cowan. Most of the time, if you read up on the kid, the ones who are quickly shown the door have been in constant troubled waters since the moment they arrived (Cowan is in this group) and have non-legal issues in addition to whatever legal stuff they have (academics, in the doghouse in terms of effort and focus, etc).

I dunno if it is right or wrong, but his methods are pretty clear at this point, and I don't think it is really "is the kid important as a player" or not. That doesn't mean he doesn't weigh that sometimes, because I'm sure he does, but I think his general framework for making these decisions is based in his judgement of a kids work ethic and overall character. If he thinks it is outside a kids normal character, he gives the kid chances to make it right (sometimes more than I would). If he's decided they basically made a bad recruiting judgement and the kid is just not what they thought as a person, they move on.

I don't have a problem with that.

He was in line for a lot of playing time this year given how thin we are at ILB. He's been given multiple chances in life dating back to HS. I'm glad Saban actually put his foot down. No team vote for punching a dude in the face.

He must not have been expected to do much at Bama and he’s been processed already.

You have to keep in mind that you are dealing with 19-22 year old kids with a lot of pressure on them from a performance on the field perspective to the classroom. They see other kids going out and doing stuff, and they want to fit in and do those things, too.

All of these issues should come into play. As a coach he has to make sure his team performs with the best players possible. but the coach also has to consider if the kid is leading other players astray, and/or setting a bad example for others. It all has to factor in. It's probably the toughest part of a coaches job.
