Question: Why did Saban hire Butch Jones?

I'm just curious... and don't start flame-throwing here... I can think of 2 reasons... 1) He wants to help Jones... 2) Jones knows UT's personnel and may help Saban in scouting for next year. What are other ideas?

He didn’t have any lesbians on his staff so he hired one to preemptively avoid any controversy for not being diverse enough. Always thinking ahead...
However he’s only getting paid like 30 g’s so the gender pay gap might become a problem

It makes him smile to make a former Tennessee head coach fetch him coffee

He’s a quality coach (not head coach) and came cheap

Not every day you can hire a ex TN coach to bring you the little Debbies creampies..

It's not so much the hire, Butch should not have taken the offer.

Maybe he just wanted Butch to see how winning in the UA-UTjr. rivalry feels like.....

I will give you the only honest answer.
Saban needed an offensive analyst. He wanted Hugh Freeze, but the AD considered him to still be too toxic to hire.
Among the other applicants, Butch stood out, because despite the collapse in 2017, his offense was the all-time UT scoring leader in 2016 (and they've had some pretty dynamic offenses). He's going to watch film and give suggestions. And he'll probably fetch coffee. Offense is the one thing he was pretty good at across his career.

as a middle finger to Tennessee. We have Tennessee paying our intern like 5 million dollars a year, and we are offsetting like 30k to fulfill the employment clause

We needed some new catchy ideas like the trash can thing he did at 10rc, Champions of Life, etc.

There have been many coaches over the years who could not succeed as head coaches but excel as assistant coaches.

Well, the last former UT coach Saban hired worked out OK for Bama.

He is not a quality offensive guy by any means. He has never been a coordinator at any level and his offenses at Tennessee we’re WOAT bad without Dobbs.
The guy does not bring anything to the table Xs and Os wise. The hire was likely made for some other reason.

Jones is a good talent evaluator

Isn't UT's current HC fresh off a job where Saban personally witnessed the coach in action? Seems to me that would be a much better scouting opportunity than hiring a guy who no longer has any influence over the team.
