Interesting...Bellard was 45 when he took the A&M job in 1972, so he was probably not washed up at that point. In the spring of 1975 he agreed to move the Arkansas game to December for tv. Since only about 1 game a week was on tv in those days, and the money was really good, he did that. Unfortunately that decision cost him a shot at a NC.
Fran was 52 when he took the A&M job, but was the wrong hire. That by the way occurs in all professions.

i would like to hear some of yinz thoughts on what coaching vacancies are likely to pop up at the end of this season? Off the top of my head I can't think of many big schools, i know there likely will be some just can't think of them. I'd like to know who we will possibly be competing with?
In the SEC all i can think of is Tenn possibly and Old Piss. We won't have to compete with Old piss for a coach, but Tenn maybe. Auburn and Arkansas I think will do well enough to keep their coaches around. All the other big jobs in the conference have coaches that are relatively new, or ones that are established. Florida maybe if they have a terrible year, but mcelwain is still newish. plus he's finished first in the east both seasons he's been there, and won their bowl game last year, so he's probably good.
nationally it seems like Notre Dame might need a new coach if kelly has a bad year, and even the miracle win against the ags won't keep Mora from getting fired by UCLA when he racks up loses with his average, at best, squad....but i still think ags might be more attractive than ucla. But other than them I'm not sure of any big time jobs possibly opening up.
it seems like it will be an easier go of it this year finding a good coach and not having to compete with other big programs.

American Conference
SMU (Chad Morris will be snatched up by someone)
ACC
Boston College (if Addazio has a bad year)
UNC (Fedora is not off to a good start)
NC State (same with Doeren)
Big 12
Texas Tech (Kingsbury is on his last year)
West Virginia (Holgorsen was almost fired last year)
Independents
Notre Dame (Kelly is out if he has another season like last year)
Mountain West
UNLV (that loss to Howard when you are a 45-point favorite is unforgivable)
PAC 12
Arizona (Rich Rod is on the hot seat)
Arizona State (Graham should have been gone last year)
Colorado (McIntyre will take a better job)
UCLA (Not making a bowl this year. Mora's win Sunday only postponed the inevitable)
SEC
Ole Miss (Luke is the interim)
Tennessee
Texas A&M (DUH)

In my opinion, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, UCLA, Notre Dame are the big schools that may be in the market. I'm not sure if Oklahoma made Lincoln Riley the full time HC, bit they could also be in the market if he melts.
Smaller schools that we can outbid and may be in the market are Arizona, Arizona State, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Missouri, and Kentucky.

yeah, so out of all those listed i see only notre dame & Tenn being a threat we might have to compete against. Possibly with UNC and UCLA. We shouldn't have to compete with anybody else for a coach, unless a potential target has a special tie to a university being a grad or what have you.

Been reading this thread
Fuentes won't leave VT unless we offer him considerably more than he makes. I have heard that they are willing to go close to 6M to keep him
McIntyre will be somewhere else, but he loves Colorado. Won't be as cheap as you think
Morris will not be at SMU. Tech, and others, are waiting to see if we pass on him
I would approach Shaw, and make him say no
Chip Kelly is a no go, given his past. I'd expect to see him somewhere out West - probably UCLA
Fleck isn't leaving Minnesota after one year
So out of that list, Shaw and Fisher are long shots, and McIntyre may actually be available. I still think we will chase the big fish, and settle on a smaller one such as Morris or a DC

I'd take a hard look at Narduzzi.

Les Miles, Chip Kelly, Craig Bohl, Greg Schiano, Tommy Tuberville, Mack Brown, Bo Pelini, Bob Stoops, etc. all fit that description.
I'm going to take a contrarian view. Everywhere I've worked, the men in their mid 50s were the most knowledgeable, effective and valuable people. Sure as your 60s wear on your brain gets a little addled and it's downhill, but those 50-something guys are in the sweet spot because they've learned how to address every situation the right way, but they haven't lost their wits yet.
40-something is great too, but still not as seasoned as 50. 30-somethings are arrogant and reckless and have less experience than they think. 20-somethings are basically worthless and represent a sunk cost investment in the future of the enterprise.

I'm thinking about going to SMU-TCU this weekend. I know it's early, but seems like Chad is paying big dividends for them already.

I noticed that. Gunnysack really shot his load on that one.

Let's pay the buyout and hire Petrino. I don't think anyone is quite as "proven" as he is in the literal sense of the word.
