Adam Zagoria is reporting that Heron will withdraw from NBA draft but transfer per a source.

Keep in mind Zagoria reported the same thing last season about Heron transferring. Zagoria is a solid bball source, especially for NY area hoops, but I'd wait for something official given his source being incorrect before

Wouldn't shock me though, Heron doesn't seem like the type of guy to be willing to accept reduced minutes or reduced usage rate

It would absolutely shock me. He said last year he has no intention of playing all 4 years. Transferring would ensure he do that

Unless he’s graduating.

There's been no indication of him graduating. He's only been in school 2 years

Only way it makes sense is that he sees the writing on the wall for his current two options failing him:

1. Go overseas, play in a league with guys older and stronger than him and try to stand out enough as a 21 year old to have an NBA team take a chance on him.

or

2. Stay at Auburn in a loaded rotation, running a flex offense that Bruce hasn't necessarily tailored to his skills in any way, see his usage and overall production decline with influx of talent and scoring options and hope somehow he improves enough to make it to the NBA.

Neither of these options currently seem fit to help him achieve his goal.

I guess he thinks he can transfer to a blue blood (I could see him trying Nova, UNC), be solid to good there, and get top notch coaching and then get drafted.

I agree with this, but I could see him wanting to transfer closer to home as a possible alternative

Also, if you look at the shot% makeup, Heron was about to see a massive cutback not only in minutes but usage/shot%

All of our offensive "role player" / non primary option minutes (McLemore, Spencer, Mitchell and even Okeke/Murray) were being replaced with primary option guys who have high shot%.

Shot% = % of Team FGA by player based on time played

Mitchell (11.7%) -> to Doughty (21% as FR on NCAAT VCU)
McLemore (17.1%) & Spencer (12.2%) -> to Wiley (19.7% as FR)

Murray (19.6%) & Okeke (17.7%) -> to Purifoy (20-25% when healthy) & SO Okeke (20+%?)

Also, random hypothetical, if Heron transfers somewhere and can graduate in the fall semester, could he graduate transfer somewhere else for the spring semester?

Does anyone know the latest on Akingbola??

Is he still looking at qualifying for the 2018 class?

Possibly UCONN. Doesn’t make sense if he wants to sit out a year though.

With Wiley back, we may do well to redshirt him if he comes early.

I know he was still planning on it as of two weeks ago. But if his intention is to reclassify in hopes of getting to school and getting minutes that possibility is now seemingly gutted.

But, any freshman could stand to gain a year in a college S&C program before they play, so maybe he will come regardless.

I feel really good about this team as is but if we could still have Akingbola come, and also add combo guard somehow, I'll feel great about it.

Yea, If he could re-qualify, he would gain a ton of experience being able to redshirt this season and practice against this team.

It's almost like too much depth could become a minor issue.

Hopefully, these guys can look further ahead than just next year.

Even without Wiley, we were planning to try and redshirt him anyways. He'd be an emergency option, but we had the depth at the 4/5 with Purifoy, Okeke, McLemore and Spencer to avoid playing him

I believe it had more to do with getting in school, S&C program + advanced competition/coaching

Spending an entire season adjusting to college life, developing against Wiley/McLemore and facing the rigors of collegiate basketball is better than anything he'd get in HS/AAU

Losing Heron fixes most of the issues in terms of minutes and even shot% assuming that Brown sees a dip while Wiley/Purifoy don't get shot hungry

So the rotations will be
PG/SG -> Harper/Doughty/Brown pick 2

SF -> Purifoy/Dunbar/Doughty pick 1

PF -> Okeke/ McLeSpencer / Purifoy pick 1

C -> Wiley/ McLemore/ Spencer / Okeke pick 1

Likely Minute Share

Harper - 30mpg (PG - 30)
Brown - 30mpg (SG - 30)
Doughty - 30mpg (PG 10, SG 10, SF 10)
Purifoy - 30mpg (SF 20, PF 10)
Dunbar - 10mpg (SF 10)

Okeke - 25mpg (PF 25)

Wiley - 20mpg (C 20)
McLemore - 15mpg (C 10 PF 5)
Spencer - 10mpg (C 10)
