Pre 1970 was the Sugar Bowl a lot less prestigious?

At first I saw many Ole Miss fans bragging about this

quote:

Sugar Bowl appearances.

Ole Miss 9
Record 5-3 and 1 tbd

And saying that they had one of the highest Sugar Bowl win totals

But then someone posted that it had been 49? Years since they had last been invited to the Sugar Bowl and I always see LSU fans point out that Ole Miss has always been historically a bad team. So it got me wondering if maybe the Sugar Bowl was a much less significant bowl game pre mid 60's?

Title is edited since dummies can't take the time to read the OP.

Ole Miss was actually good up until about 1962 or so. Forced desegregation was basically the death knell for their football program.

No, we just used to be really good at football. We had a stretch that was way better than anything A&M has done in their history.

6 over 15 years doesn't seem as impressive as 7 in 13 in a much stronger conference

And I can't find any of your claimed recognized national titles listed by any notable source, they all show other schools winning those years?

1985 Southwest Conference Champions
1986 Southwest Conference Champions
1987 Southwest Conference Champions
1991 Southwest Conference Champions
1992 Southwest Conference Champions
1993 Southwest Conference Champions
1998 Big 12 Conference Champions

If no one recognizes Ole Miss's claimed titles but Ole. Miss, does that mean the sec was really down during that period?

1960 was FWAA poll, and the NCAA website lists that one as split between OM and Minnesota. That's the only one I ever personally care to claim.

No one gives a shite about the southwest conference. Sorry

Your original question, what the OP is, was proven to be a clown question, so forgive me if I don't take any of your other posts in this thread seriously.

How was it proven to be a clown question?

Because everyone knows the sugar bowl has always been prestigious.

Prestigous in a different way. In the mid 70's it became the destination for the SEC champ so it became prestigious then but not really before that. We tended to play in the Orange Bowl a lot prior to the bowl tie ins. The Sugar Bowl really took off when the SEC tied in and when it was moved out of Tulane Stadium to the Superdome.
Ole miss is correct though. It's a big bowl now with the money payout. Ole miss not going for 44 years or whatever shows how big a bowl it was.

Thanks for the answer

So it was a much more regional bowl before 70, that makes sense.

We were sent to the sugar bowl after nearly all of our SEC Championship seasons I believe. It might be all but they might have sent us to the cotton bowl a time or two.

So you were 2 loss sec champions in 2 years and only had 7 wins in your last sec championship year, were those considered down years in the SEC overall?

Pretty sure the Cotton bowl used to be bigger than the Sugar Bowl.

Idk, ask an old guy. I don't see why you're trying to go down this route.
