Ok...the easy thing to say is "frick em" pull their scholarships and cancel the game. Who knows, maybe that's what he wanted to do? I have no idea.

But realistically, and to some degree it comes down to self preservation. He's in a dog fight for recruiting; trying lock down Missouri while plucking the best from Texas and traditional SEC and Big 12/Big 12 states. It's a hell of a gamble to be viewed (true or not) as a coach who doesn't support his (black) players. It's an easy sell if you're Arkansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Oklahoma, etc. to say don't go to that racist place.

So what do you do? Take a stand and risk everything? Fail to meet your TV obligations by not fielding a team at a neutral site venue this weekend? Maybe. Some would consider it noble, but he would surely be crushed by media (at least in the short term) and viewed as a failure who lost the team, maybe even lose his job. Stranger things have happened.

Do you go with the flow and hope it's a differentiator, at least rhetorically as a coach/program who supports its players?

I know it's easy to crush Pinkel, but I'm sure he is aware he lives a world where the truth simply doesn't matter. It's a sad state of affairs, but can you really blame him if you were in his shoes by trying to hold it together, whatever his motivations may have been?

When you're a coach at a high level, I think you have to put your political ideals aside in order to do what you feel is best for your job. Say what you have to say to keep your team together, and say what you have to say to get the players you want for the future.

When you're paid millions to do a good job, you can't let stuff like this get in the way.

Dean Smith is an example of someone who said what he had to say to get the players he wanted.

Well, he stood by his players and this is the aftermath.

He won't be able to recruit, the university is the laughing stock of the nation and it's only just beginning, and he should be fired due to his lack of loyalty and inciting this whole blowup.

The alternate scenario would have a ways to go to give this total mess up a run for it's money.

What he should have done was to get ahead of this and take preemptive action and explain why a boycott would be a bad idea and divisive to the team. Pinkel was late to the party, so he was forced into a position of having to react. Unfortunately, what we have seen from Pinkel...as also evidenced by the interview...is a propensity toward being unprepared when it comes to this stuff.

I disagree. In his press conference he stated that he asked the players to wait until Sundays meeting, but they felt so passionately about it they went forward without his council. He was then forced to side with their action rather than try and steer them down a better path.

It appears to me that the tail is wagging the dog. Personally I don't think that the President of the school or the Chancellor should have resigned. This set a very bad precedent and made Pinkel's job more difficult.

Put his name into the ring for the 9+ openings.

If I was a professor or coach at Mizzou I'd be on the way out.

Inmates are running the asylum there.

first of all it was 30 players on an ncaa allowed roster of 105 including walk on's.

that leaves 75 players not protesting.

he should have called a meeting with the 30 players under the guise of hearing them out. as soon as he entered the room told every player not on the 2 deep get your schit and get out you're off the team and we will not sign transfer papers for anyone of you to an FBS school!
we're a 4 and 5 team and you're not even in the 2 deep you'll not be missed.

for the rest of you, you have 5 minutes to think about it.

a guy that just gave pinkle a million dollar a year raise lost his job over this lie.
and he rewards him by going 4 and five and throwing him under the bus.

BYU's gonna beat them like rented mules.

He's done all he can do and it looks like things are not getting much better. When you cave in to shite like these scumbags, you better know they'll continue to protest and want more.

I'd pack my shite and gtfo of there with a quickness. Not looking good for Mizzou.

This. Too many openings not to take one now. He is pretty much done at Mizzou anyway w/ the rise of UT and UF and his crap recruiting. He best hope is to become the Dan Mullen of the East.

Pinkle could have made this a game changer in the opposite direction than where the program and university are headed now. He pretty much let some 19-20 year olds ruin a program and university. This whole movement would not have gone anywhere without the weight of the football program behind it. Everyone bitches and moans about the entitlement of HS recruits and college FB players. Pinkle had a chance to change that and say that the university was not going to be held hostage by students that are under contract and that this entitlement mentality was not going to be used to intimidate their program.

He could have stated that he understands they have a right to protest but they need to understand this is the real world and there are consequences to actions. He could have said that at Mizzou we are trying to prepare out students for the real world and not just trying to cater to their warm and fuzzies. He had a great opportunity on a huge stage and he botched it.

THIS.....Pinkle doesn't seem very bright but he was in a tough spot no doubt. However, he should have shown better leadership and got out in front of the issue and not allowed this cancer to spread in his locker room. He should have been preaching team unity, chemistry, and rising above this crap for the good of the team and for the University...preach togtherness, standing by your team mates and school and setting a positive example....

When the players threatened to boycott a game it was not that big of a deal. There were still enough kids to field a team. Only when Gary "George Dickel" Pinkel said he backed the players, which meant the team would not play and owe BYU a cool million did this all go to shite. He single handedly legitimized the 1950 morons and precipitated the resignation of Wolfe and Loftin. He should be fired and when they don't win another game this year he will be. He has clearly lost control of the team. Between this shite, the crap with Maulk and the product on the field he should be done. BTW good luck getting hired somewhere else after you hamstrung the president and chancellor at your last stop. Maybe he could sell whitewalls at Sears.

Quite simply he screwed the pooch on this situation. He handled it wrong and consequences for choices always come into effect at some point.

he should have nipped it in the bud...and taken whatever roster he had and faced BYU this weekend. He would probably get shite stomped by the Fightin' Whiteys but he and the team could hold there heads high.

Pinkel's actions and the subsequent wake that's left was a heads up for a lot of programs/coaches and their administration.

Listen to your players, hear them out, show patience and understaning for their views. In the end players are under a contract to perform their duties and when they refuse to do so, there are consequences.

Also, who would want the Missouri job now? Black is the only qualification now.

Pinkel couldn't have done anything in this situation. The best option he had was to support his players. His stock or stature in the coaching community is no different than it's ever been. He's been loyal to Mizzou, and they were loyal to him when he got a dui.

He's a damn good coach, at a school with a low football ceiling. They have trouble sustaining a competitive football team with recruits within the state. They won't fire him, and he's probably too old to want to start another rebuilding job.
