What is the statute of limitations on college football "Elite Status?"

For example, how long can a team claim to be an "elite program" if they fail to win anything significant since their last conference or national championship?

Some programs just "have it".
Others don't.

Arkansas is still elite from 1964 and our little bump in the Petrino years.
Before this gets flamed to hell, it was just a joke.

I mean look at a program like ND who hasn't won a NC since '88. Most would still consider them an elite program. I think it's a mixture of history and viability. Someone like Oregon, who's been extremely good the past several years but hasn't won a NC some may not deem to be elite. I thinks it's all pretty subjective but I think it really boils down to # of NCs.

1981 and forward. If you haven't won a title by then it's just a shame and you should accept being average.

trust me....you'll never have to worry about it

There are only a few elite programs imo. Only one in the SEC.

In my opinion Alabama is the only elite program in the SEC.

Whatever they are, Tennessee is currently exploring the boundaries.

According to the Big 10 homers in this forum, the answer is "What is 100 or more years?", Alex.

5 years for conference championship
20 years for national championship
20 years for national championship

Maybe it depends on when you became "elite".
Michigan is considered an elite program by most, but has only finished #1 twice in the poll era (1948,1997). It has a lot to do with the fact that they were one of the great teams through the first 70 years of college football.
BYU has the same number of NC's in the past 67 years, but isn't considered elite by anyone.

What else is significant other than a conference or national championship? Only Ole Miss brags about "NY6" bowl appearances.

A "generation" is thought of as ~25 years.
If your program hasn't accomplished much of note for 25 years, we'll say that.

At least as long as it takes to get rid of that LGBT label on a program...
