I recently attended my son's graduation at a large arena. Myself and an unrelated woman had arrived early and staked out a group of seats for our families.

Plenty of empties all around us.

Guy walks up, bows up and says "you can't save seats". I said "whatever" and moved a few rows up. I certainly know seats cannot be "saved" at general admission event, but it seemed a little ridiculous that he would be unpleasant about it- especially with the building basically empty.

So every few minutes people walked up to me and said, "are those saved?" I said, "yes, but I can move up a row if you insist." Not a single person asked me to move. I guess most folks just get along.

Was this guy just looking for conflict?
I thought it was odd. I certainly am not going to jail over seats. If he continues this behavior, he will meet someone less civil than myself and probably wake-up in an ER

There is an unwritten 1 to 1 seat saving rule at public events. For every person there, you can save one seat. One or two people saving a bunch of seats is bullshite. The fact that most people are too pussy and averse to conflict to enforce this doesn't change that.

Saving huge blocks of seats is poor form. But in an empty arena, who cares? If it was the guys responsibility he could of been nicer and said "as the arena fills up you won't be able to save those seats"

Have you ever considered asking your family/friends to arrive at the same time as you?

Meh. If one guy is saving 3 to 4 seats, I don't mind. If one guy is holding a whole row, then that's not ok. But if there's plenty of seating I don't care how many you save. I'm not going to be a jerk about it.

You also have to consider the quality of the seats you are saving.

I don't care unless I want those seats, in which case I ignore someone trying to save multiple seats himself.

I'll let it slide at graduation. Do that shite at a general admission concert is a small venue, we have a problem.

Agreed.

Only two things are more annoying:

- People who want to stand and cheer for their kid, their kid's friends, etc when they're asked to save the cheers for after names are called.

- People who run up to the front to take pictures but don't move out of the way when they're finished for others.

Yeah, at a graduation it shouldn't be an issue. You're probably saving seats for family so you can experience it all together.

Anywhere else, then its kind of a bitch move.

Depends, I was saving 5 seats close to the tunnel entrance at a recent graduation because 4 elderly people were arriving with the 5th person. I had to be an arse about it with a couple of groups of people who didn't get it but they climbed their lazy asses up the stairs when I didn't back down to them. If that makes me an a-hole then so be it.

The school where I teach has a graduation seat saving policy.

You are allowed to save seats until 15 minutes before the event starts then an announcement is made that all saved seats are now fair game.

This is my favorite 15 minutes of graduation.

Saved seats at my oldest daughters graduation a few years back. Two of us saved 7 seats between us. Got into it with another family but held my ground. Afterwards felt like a jerk but really wanted the family to all sit together. Tonight my youngest daughter graduates from high school and I'm so more relaxed. If relatives don't arrive when they are supposed to, I guess it's up the stairs they go.

Nothing is worse than the bitches at the condo/resort that get out to the pool at 8 in the morning to put towels in all the damn pool chairs to save until they get down there after lunch.
