they have a huge vested interest as that is where their players are coming from. It may be true that they dont care who wins and runs a certain offense, but they are constantly sending scouts to games. Are they sending scouts to games because they dont care about anything related to college football?

They may have a vested interest but they need to invest some money. Until they have some skin in the game the NFL should go pound sand.

Why? It shouldn't be the NFLs job to protect CFB.
Posted on 5/23/15 at 10:35 am to agswin
it is not like CFB is the NFL's minor league. They dont have to put money into CFB. But all the stuff they are doing about head injuries does benefit the college game as they will follow suit. I think the 8th referee started in the NFL. They give thousands of CFB players a chance to live out their dream. So they mutually benefit each other. There is plenty of money in the NCAA to spread around that the colleges should not have to beg the NFL for money.

How is Jameis Winston a dual threat QB? He rushed for 65 yards last year and his mobility is mediocre at best. He's the very definition of a pocket passer.

I think we all agree he isn't a DT. he was listed as one coming out of high school is all. No idea how much running he did in high school. But I think we're kidding ourselves if we can't admit his DT listing is at least partially due to racism. Name a black QB who isn't considered dual threat for college recruitment.
First guy I could think of was Bridgewater then I looked up his recruit bio on ESPN, this is the first line: "Bridgewater is one of the more intriguing dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2011 class."

Yeah, let's just ignore the fact that many major universities use getting players prepared for the NFL as a recruiting tool. You can't bitch about organization while completely ignoring what the other one is doing. Many colleges use the NFL as well as the other way around.
Secondly, you are forgetting that the coaching world is small. Many college & NFL coaches are friends who share information inside of their circle. You make it seem like it's an us against them situation when it truly isn't that way.

Winston and Petty are not dual threats

Scouting sites can go full retard at times. Nowadays fans put entirely too much trust & faith in what they read when actuality, it's a bunch of bullshite sometimes. Here's an example of a pre draft scouting report of JJ Watt's "weaknesses".
quote:
Won't consistently get the edge on tackles with his get off or quickness. Plays high at times, can be blown off the ball by the double team, but does fight hard to hold ground. Lacks some lateral mobility both rushing the passer and playing in space. Will occasionally give up outside contain.

What the NFL wants is Aaron Rogers a pocket passig style who can extend plays. Cam is huge and that is why it works pretty well for him, but most others shouldn't run enough due to injury risk. Andrew luck, like someone said, is super athletic based on his combine but is still a pocket passer who has the ability. The Smaller ones in the usual dual threat vein I don't think translate to the punishment of the nfl well. They will get some more tries recently, but if there aren't a lot of successes then they will probably go back to preferring the pp by a large margin. I think the biggest potential effect will be qb's having to spend a couple years learning before starting due to the lack of experience in that style.
The newer starting QBs are now the mobile pocket passers and dual threats. I mean check out this link for 2014.

This is Andrew Luck after only 3 years
189 carries 902 yards (4.8 ypa) 12 TDs, that's in addition to high volume of passes.

Every QB can run to some extent. If you find a PP that is accurate enough to pick apart a defense, and you have a decent OL, the Defenses will put more players in coverage and won't blitz the QB enough to matter if hes a great runner.
That said obviously you would rather have an accurate DT over a PP whose about as accurate but good true PPs are usually more accurate. Defensive minded coaches want to slow the game down and will always take a more accurate PP whose not going to get hit much and can make those extra throws. Until defensive minded HC quit there will always be PP.

Watching him do rollouts/bootlegs is actually fun to watch. Definitely a very good athlete.

Not everyone. There are plenty of QB's who live and die by how the pocket protects them.
Brady, Roth, Rivers, none of those guys can move.

I was using their ratings coming out of HS, Winston was a legit 4.5 Dual threat who could run he simply got bulky at Florida State.

JW is not a dual threat , his mobility is average at best.
His 40 time (4.97) was 13th out of QBs at the combine. In addition it was over .25 secs slower than the top 15 LBs and the top 15 DLs at the combine. It's not weight , he's slow by comparison. What happened him scramble , it's almost like he's clumsy, stumbling around , running wildly looking for anywhere to fall forward.
What he does well is slide and move in the pocket enough to find a window and then he absolutley has the arm and touch to get it there. That is every bit the definition of a traditional NFL QBs.

No, not at all.
-the single wing was the stuff and the forward pass would never catch on
-The pro passing game in the 60's was the future due to the excitement created by the new AFL. Running game is dead.
-70's hit and the wishbone/veer is the rage with wishbone teams Bama, OU, Texas and Nebraska leading the NCAA in offense every year and winning pretty much all national titles.
The fun n gun comes to town. Will never be stopped Spurrier has one exactly one title and the fun n gun is pretty much a footnote in history.
Offensive innovation is nothing new and is predicated on how defenses adjust. Once they do, said offense dies. Usually takes about 10 to 15 years for it to become null. Right now the spread is all that but not winning titles. The same thing that won 100 years ago wins today. Playing Defense. I know it doesnt seem that way right now, especially to the younguns who havent seen these offenses come and go but football has been played a lot longer than the last 15 years and potent offenses have come and they have gone. Don't confuse DT with mobile. TOday, John Elway would be considered DT. No, the death of the Dan Marino is not here. It never will be. A good mobile QB is always gonna be a plus but the Nick Marshalls and Michael Vicks of the world are not the future. In 2020, there will be new hot offense and it too, will die.
