My fellow AU fans seem to forget that they wanted JJ ran out of town on a rail before Malzahn/Pearl being hired, (and to a lesser extent the women's softball coach and baseball coach.)

You don't judge a hire at the beginning...you judge it when that coach leaves/retires.

We haven't forgot. But he still has a punchable face.

Dennis Franchoine imo would have been successful at Bama had he chosen to stay. Mike Price and Mike Shula were just filler hires because no one good was taking the job with the sanctions Bama just got. Anthony Grant didn't work out, but it was a very popular hire at the time.

Still makes me wonder how Dennis Franchione would've done if he hadn't bolted after a couple of years.

Me too.

Well actually I wonder how we would have done without him sinking our program.

I'm very pleased with Battle. But I do want him to make the right decision on Mitch Gaspard after this season.

Yep.

He's next on the chopping block.

Not GOATs, which is what the OP said.

So you're dumb and can't follow.

I would guess Saban outlasts Battle. I don't think Battle will be hiring Saban's replacement.

Anthony Grant was a "home run" hire.

LSU fans deal with the same situation. Most logical fans can see joe alleva has done a really good job at LSU, but because he's not an "LSU guy", he'll never be good enough for some.

Every great athletic director makes bad hires some times. Hell, I even read some Florida fans screaming "frick Foley", when he's made Florida a premier athletic program.

It's always easy to point the finger at the AD, but a lot of times they make good hires that just aren't the right fit at the school.

Honestly, Tom Jurich is the only AD I can think of who's just about made a dynamite hire nearly every time

Mal's real success was convincing people to give enough money to build all the facilities and upgrades that we built even while football was a disaster. Without the changes at BDS, the practice fields, etc I don't think we would have landed Saban. And that was all Mal.

As for hiring coaches, Mal clearly did not have a great track record until he hit pay dirt with Saban.

I have a friend who had breakfast with him one morning, and he gushes over how cool and great of a guy Mal Moore is. It sounds like his likable personality bought him more time than most

There is no doubt that he was a great man. All who knew him said as much.

He came out and stood around with all of us in right field at the NCAA Super Regional against North Carolina back in 2006. Just sat out there, talked to students as we all drank beer, ate a hot dog, watched the game. Was really, really cool. Just a really nice man.

GOAT Mal Moore

The guy who hired Grant, Franchione, Price, and Shula?

You're an idiot.

ETA - Already been brought up. Guess I should have read through the thread first.

To be fair :

- Grant was the hottest mid-major coach in basketball. Hiring him was a coup at the time for us.

- Franchione was a bastard, but he won games while he was there.

- Hiring Price after the disaster that was Fran leaving was about as good as anybody could hope for. Sanctions looming and Fran leaving and we hire a guy who was coming off 2 10 win seasons and a Rose Bowl (His 2nd) at Washington State?

- Shula - who the fvck else was he supposed to hire in May before the season started in September?

I'm not defending Moore as some legend. Those hires failed and that was on him, but he wasn't exactly hiring Saban's replacement to take over a Top 5 program in those days. His claims to fame are the facilities and Saban, and it's not a bad claim.

He absolutely was. Doesn't mean Avery will ever win a game, but it's still a great hire.

My personal opinion of Mal Moore's greatest accomplishments far preceed the hiring of Coach Saban.

Mal Moore helped launch the Crimson Tradition campaign, the first major fundraising effort for athletics in UA history. It came in the wake of one of expansions of BDS and it propelled the second expansion that topped out seating at +101,000 with the renovation and upgrade of the facade on BDS.

It has far exceeded the $100 million capital campaign that was announced back in 2002 when Bockrath was AD.

At the time Bama was on probation, through those dark days Bama could have sat back and waited till the end of probation to kick off a campaign of that magnitude. But Mal Moore wanted to raise money and get the ball rolling on facility improvements so that when we came out of the probation UA would be in a position to attrack a damn good coach.

SPRING BREAK 2012!! I saw bed sheets hanging from the balconies of condo's on the beach demanding to fire Jay Jacobs.

IMO, that shite got someone at AU's attention and Jacobs has done a damn fine job with the latest round of coaching hires.
