Disagree. Just teach them how to sign their name. That's all they need cursive for.

Disagree.

Largely because everything is technology based anymore. The only time cursive is used anymore is for signatures and I don't think I've even used it myself outside of that for a couple decades.

There should be a bigger emphasis on grammar instead.

Disagree.

And I love to write in cursive.

But even I can admit that there's really no practical purpose for it anymore. Let it go the way of calligraphy and those who wish to pursue it can do so.

Good. I had to learn how to write cursive in the third grade. I'm 23. My 18 yr old brother never learned how.

Disagree. Cursive sucks and is pointless. It's like learning French.

I'm all for learning to write in cursive. It is necessary to develop the awesome brand of a print/cursive hybrid for daily writin like I have

Like it.

You're teaching kids a skill. Sure it's largely an impractical one, but more importantly you're teaching them how to learn a skill. And maybe on a psychological level you're teaching them to take pride in their undertakings.

I have mixed feelings on the subject, while I think it would be nice if we taught all students to write in it I think we have more important problems in our educational system and should worry about things like history, math, and grammar before we spend resources on cursive

The amount of ppl in this country who can't answer basic questions like who was the 1st POTUS or who is the current VPOTUS is simply baffling and depressing

And FTR, I was taught cursive in 4th grade and was pretty good at it. They told us we would ABSOLUTELY HAVE to know it and it would be mandatory for the rest of our lives

Fast forward to 6th or 7th grade and we used it for nothing. That always pissed me off

IIRC the Third Grade in Texas Public Schools when I was in public school in Texas was pretty much dedicated to Multiplication and Writing in Cursive. We spent time every day that entire year learning to write in cursive. (And repeatedly multiplying 2 sets of whole numbers from 0-12).

Practically half of an entire school year dedicated to writing in cursive.

You don't need it anymore. Why spend so many resources toward it? Teachers are already pressed to squeeze in the state mandated curricula as it is.

Before photography was invented a little part of every day was dedicated to drawing. You couldn't graduate the 8th grade if you coudn't draw a respectable landscape or still life.

Before GPS we read maps. Before trustworthy maps you read the stars with a sextant. Who among us could use a sextant tonight?

As we gain we lose. Very few of us can build a trebuchet. Some of us couldn't butcher a hog.

It's a lost art and it was lost in two generations basically.

I was taught cursive in 3rd grade and went back to printing in 7th grade when they told us we didn't have to write that way anymore. For me, I could always print notes faster than writing them in cursive. I'm laughing at the assholes at the state level that will have to grade cursive-answered state writing tests because of this.
